Had another experience with "streaky" Benchmade QC today and I need your suggestions for a replacement before the world ends tomorrow night!

As I'm still milking my vacation, I went up to my local shop today to see what was new there. I bought a BM Nimravus Cub in ATS-34 w/the new stlyle carbon fiber sheath. The one I fondled at the store seemed real sharp and the sheath looked nice. They had the M2 version as well, but I didn't want to pay the extra $30.00. I said I'd take one, so the kid behind the counter grabbed one from his stash underneath the display. Not even realizing this, I brought it home.

Upon playing with the knife, I kind of drew the blade out of the sheath hard, and somehow stabbed myself in the thumb. When I looked at my finger for the blood- there was none! I was surprised, and I ran my fingers along the edge- seriously this is the dullest knife I've ever bought. Even the tip is dull. As hard as I stabbed my thumb, any other knife should have at least torn through my skin a little. If you look closely at the edge, it's nice and polished, but there's no bite at all. I can take it and push it hard into my palm, with not a hint of penetration. (not that that's great idea, I know) But c'mon for the price I paid, I want a sharp knife. Sure, I could have made certain the one I was buying was sharp, but why should I have to?

Anyways, as much as it's cool looking in that sheath, I'm going back to exchange it tomorrow. I'm not going to get another Nimravus, but my collection is in need of an "Alpha" folder. You know, big tough, and ready for action. So what do you guys think I should get? I want a Benchmade, again 'cause my collections lacking in that department and the shop carries most of them. I kind of liked the idea of a fixed blade, but I'll wait for my multi position carry FB from Mr. Griffith. Kudos to BM's design effort on the Nimravus sheath- kydex and carbon fiber, NICE.

OK- so what's it gonna be? I've had a Pardue 720- traded it, I didn't care for the handle.

I've got a 705 McH+W, great knife for the size, so I was thinking maybe a 710.

It's a Sebenza wannabe- but what about the Mono-Lock?

Dark Star? Stryker? AFCK? Arrrgh! Please fellow forumites, help me decide which Benchmade to buy to "ring in the New Year." Keep in mind I intend this to be my primary 'tactical' folder. Any suggestions/experiences you've had would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all-

P.S. If one of you survives the coming apocolypse, and I don't, who wants dibs on the P.P. 730S I ordered today?

Sounds like you need the 710 to round out the group. I would pick it over the 750, even though I am not fond of G-10.

I would recommend he Benchmade 750 Pinnacle. It is a beautiful knife with a great profile. The Mono-lock is incredible!! There is no way you could make this lock fail, NO WAY!!

When you go back to return the Nimravus make sure you handle one. You won't be sorry.

Good luck. Let us know what you get.

I think I might hold out for the new Elishewitz Axis. Looks pretty sweet to me!

The ergos on that one look a ton better than the 710, which had pretty good ergos. If the 730 is anything like the Stryker in feel, that is going to be the knife to beat in 2000! (and I am always saying that I am unimpressed with Benchmade... sigh)

Excluding the REKAT Carnivore and the Emerson Commander and ASSUMING that I have nothign against americanized Tantoes (i do not care for them but the damn Stryker handle is just sooo sweet), my list would be:

Stryker
710
AFCK
750 pinnacle

but I did not like tanto folders so now I carry a 710 and the rest are on my wishlist. yeah if i can actually save money =1

750 monolock, great knife, vastly underrated. Just make sure you check the knife you buy! Not the one you look at.

I own or have owned most of BM's you've
mentioned, and I really believe the 750 is the fairest of them all.

710. If you don't have one, you will eventually get one.

If the shop carries only BMs, get a refund and go somewhere where they sell Spydies, and get a Military. Other than the Sebenza, the Military is the best production folder available at ANY price.

In terms of a "tactical" blade, there isn' t any folder out there that can replace a properly made (medium size in this case)fixed blade with a corresponding belt sheath in terms of strength and draw speed. But for a production folder in this case, I' d have to agree with Jim. Get a Military.

Though I' ve only handled the Nimravus series a few times, I' d say that the rather smoothly finished scales are not suitable for serious or "tactical" use. Additionally, their edges do not line up flush with the perimeter of the blade tang. With a "white knuckle" grip in less than ideal conditions, not only will the entire knife start slipping in the hand but one will start feeling those edges bite into the fingers and palm areas.
