Okay, I just got a little extra scratch and I need to replace my "well worn" XL Voyager. I need a folder, 'cause my employer is not too fond of my fixed blades. So, I've got about a $100 to spend, and here are some of my choices so far:

Fullsized AFCK
710 Axis
Stryker
Pinnacle
?????

What else????

Also, who do you guys recommend I buy from. Who have you hand the best experiences with? I have only ordered from the Knifecenter, so my experience is limited.

Last question. Has anybody replaced the scales on their 710 or 705 or 720 or 730 before? If I get the 710, AFCK or Stryker, I will probably replace the scales. Is it a difficult task with the Axis lock? I am ignorant as to how the lock is put together, so that is why I ask.

Thanks in advance
Jared

Hello!

I'd suggest that you get either an Emerson Commander or the CQC-7, my absolute favorite carry knives.
A bit more dough, but a LOT more of knife, not that Benchmade makes bad knives, i got more then a few, but the Emerson knives are just more...

Just my 4 öre...,one öre isn't many cents...

I'd take a good, long look at the full-sized Spyderco Wegner.

I've disassembled and Axis before. New scales really shouldn't be that hard. There is a milled-out area for the 'Omega-springs', and the slot for the lock bar, but other than that they are standard scales.

As for which knife, I have a 705, and it is quite nice; I assume the 710 is similar. The Pinnacle is sort of like a poor-man's Sebenza. Personally, my favorite folder in the price range suggested by your other choices is the 730 Ares. It fits my hand wonderfully, and the colored scales (they are not purple, like Benchmade's photo! I don't know why they don't replace that photo) set it apart from all the other black G10 tactical knives out there. I like standing out from the crowd.

Hell if it's a working knife take a look at the CRKT M-16's. You can get 'em for about half what you've got, they really are great knives for the money! Then you can use the other $50 towards some other knife (of course).

Or, how about the new UDT's? They are running just a bit over that, not much! Depends on where you look!

Spyderco Military or Endura. Don't overlook the mighty Delica either, that knife packs a lot of useability into a little package. I've handled the M16's before and they're very nice too. Excellent fit and finish. The only thing stopping me from getting one is the fact I just had to put 4 new tires and a new engine in my car to get it to pass inspection. Definetely don't overlook Spyderco though.

PS Take a look at the Native too; its reasonably priced and has the CPM 440V steel to boot. Looks to be very ergonomic as well. Hope this helps

Well I appreciate the response so far, please keep them coming.

I should have probably given a little more info. I am not "overlooking" Spyderco, so to speak, I have just had a "bad" experience with them in the past. I have owned and destroyed 5 Endura's and messed up a GIN-1 Zytel handled Native that I considered to be a sub-par knife at best. I am not looking for anything that does not have liners and prefer a handle material like G-10, I'll never buy another Zytel handled knife. I am willing to look into Spyderco again, I guess, but I am kind of put-off by the single liner idea...maybe I am just uneducated. Also, EVERY SINGLE Spyderco I have had lost the tip in a matter of months. (With the Native it was a matter of days) Is that a normal problem with the Millitary (same basic blade design as the Endura) and/or the Wegner? I must admit that I do like the looks of the Wegner, and the Starmate, but I am not going to spend $100 on something that is going to loose its tip and work in a manner I consider poor.

Jared

PS: I don't mind spending the whole amount on 1 knife, I really want as high a quality of a piece as that can get.

I'd go BM 710, especially out of the ones on your list. Excellent lock, good ergonomics and a more useful blade shape than the Stryker IMO. I'm also a big fan of the Wegner. One of the best folders ever. I too lost the tip on a Endura, but I was using it as a screwdriver, a job better suited for a, well a screwdriver.

My vote goes to the Stryker in M2 steel.......

The problem with Benchmade knives is that if you dissasemble them then you void the warranty.....

Hello, I posted two very very similar questions in the past week or two. Try to search for them using the words "710" and "750". You'll surely find them and there is a ton of information in there on each knife including links to reviews. Personally, I chose the Pinnacle instead of the AFCK, 710, and starmate. I really like the looks, the shape of blade, the mono-lock and the simplicity in it amazes me. It received VERY good reviews. Good luck.

I would recommend the 910 Stryker, 730 Aries, or an actual Emerson CQC-7(or Raven if you are willing to spend the extra $70..I probably wouldn't) I carry a 9100SBT (Auto Styker) everyday and I love it. I have a 730 Ares (545-1000) and the Axis lock rocks, and it has great grip, and blade ergonomics, but I do not carry mine due to it being #'d and being a pre-production run...... I also carry an Emerson Raven from time to time, and the grip is wonderful and feels great, but the CQC-7 is just as noce, but cost a LOT less...... For the money the Styker is probably the best buy!!!!!!

I will also recommend the Wegner. One of the toughest folders out there, period. I really dont think you will be likely to break the tip. The spine is fairly thick all the way to the tip. Even Lynn Thompson of Cold Steel says it is one of the toughest folders that Cold Steel tested. It takes alot to get Lynn to admit anything like that. Also one of the most comfortable knives around. Check the knives for sale individual forum for a full size Wegner. You wont find many because no one wants to get rid of them. They are that good.

I have both the 750 and 710. I carry the 750 I like the way it fits in my hand. The lock up is great and once you thin the edge out it gets very sharp. I bought the 710 because I wanted something in M2 steel, but there is something about the knife I do not like. I can't put my finger on what it is, maybe just the way it feels in my hand. Go with the 750 you will be real pleased with it.

BM 710HS, without a doubt.
M2 is a favorite steel of mine. Takes a great edge, tough as heck steel, and edge last a long time. Contrary to popular belief, I have not had any problem with corrosion on my BM 145HS, and it has been stripped of its BT2 coating. I have two 710's and love 'em both.
