I know you get this all the time, but I am stuck, I am getting a Elishewitz Persian in a couple of months, but still want a user knife that I can beat up that is inexpensive. I loved my CRKT KISS (though it was alittle small), but my dad just stole it.
Here is my delimna, I really like three knives for my purposes: CRKT Sampson Kiss (great design, and no one even thinks it is a knife when they see it); CRKT Navajo; and the new EDC by Camillus. Can anyone give me a good reason to pick one of these over the others. I would love the help. Thanks, you all rock!!!!

The KISS knives are cute, but for hard use you want something a little sturdier. The Camillus is a Darrell Ralph design. You can't go wrong with that.

I haven't heard a single complaint yet about the EDC. I'm teetering on the brink of ordering one myself, and for the price, with all of the features you get, it sounds like one of the sweetest pieces out there at the moment.

Hi newknifeguy!

Let me cloud your issue a little. I just got a Spyderco Goddard Lightweight Plain edge, for $29.95 from Smoky Mountain Knife Works. It's a close out model that Spyderco discontinued, but it's real nice. Blade material is ats-55, and, like most Spyderco's, it's hair-poppin' sharp out of the box, and very light weight! It's definately going to be in my pocket.

If you really need a beater on the cheap, check out the CRKT Mirage or Commander series, on huge discount at Smoky Mountain wwww.eknifeowrks.com . $10 each, and worth at least 2x that.

If you want out of your 3 choices, I would put the KISS last, because I think the KISS has a "gee whiz" factor, but the other frame locks are more durable designs.

The Camillus 154CM EDC is to die for!!! It's a practical, no-nonsense knife. It features great steel, an awesome lock, and Darrel Ralph beauty. It has a Wow factor, but only in terms of excellence. There's none of that "this is a cool feature" stuff that only lasts for a week before you find its weak points.

How could you ask for more? Well.... You could ask for more, but then you'd have to buy one of Darrel's customs to get what you want.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Buzzbait, you stumbled upon one of my favorite philosophies in knifedom:
"You could ask for more, but so could the knifemaker."

If you want a good user knife, just dash over to the For Sale forums and there are hundreds of people with literally THOUSANDS of knives that they are willing to let go for a good deal. Good people over there with good knives. Still can't figure out why somebody wouldn't want to use one of Allen's knives though.

Another alternative -- altho I'd probably recommend either the Mirage or Spydie Goddard at SMKW -- would be to ask Roger at Bayou Lafourche what he'll sell a full-size Apache or Apache II for. I believe he'll sell the full size for around $30, and the II for a bit less. ATS-34, aluminum handles, and to me, feels awfully good in the hand. And, the full size handle is long enough that you can legitimately use it closed as an impact weapon, unless your hand is truly huge.

IMO, the Mirage @ $30 was a bargain. At $10, it is a steel. I think Roger will sell the smaller Mirage for about $13.

If you're determined to buy one of your original 3, then if you like steel handles, I'd say go for the Navajo. Or the EDC, but I'd spend the extra $15 and get the 154CM steel.

If you're looking for a 3 inch blade, Frame lock, go with the Camillus EDC in 154CM. If your cash flow is low, go with the Outdoor Edge Paragee, also a D. Ralph design. Personally, I prefer the Paragee over the 420HC EDC.
