if you could only choose between a benchmade 735(ares) or 556(mini griptilian) and no other knives, regardless of price which one would it be?
it is an edc. it will see a lot of torture. including getting wet, prying, stabbing etc... it must fit inside pants pockets everyday.
is the 735 too big to fit inside a standard pocket?

i know the knifes are different, but they are my only two choices for an edc(long story).
your opinions please.

thank you,
holdanedge.

I would choose 735.
But - to be honest - just a matter of personal taste.
Maybe 735 is a little bit better "every way".

I've got 730 and I think it isn't too big for pocket carry.

BUT: I wouldn't use it (or any other folder) as a pry bar. I think - again IMHO - it's misuse of a knife.

actually, i might be able to get the 705. that is more of a size i like. the only reason i dont like the g10 knives is because they are not moulded to fit your hand and feel sort of like sandpaper to me. although, i know everyone thinks they are better.
i love aluminum handles , but they look like crud after a while of "abuse".

i guess i am to picky. out of all the knives available today, the only ones i know of that i would actually carry are the bm 705,735,556. the 556 is cute. even though it is a cheapie.
the spyderco's are way to tacticle for my taste. i understand buck is not to big on quality anymore? same with gerber. boker, i would snap it. kershaw, very illeagle here.
what else does that leave? my favorite knife is my sebenza. but, i would never cut anything with it! it stays on my coffee table.

anyone with ideas for my edc under 4.8 inches closed, comfortable grip, harmless looking, under $200. comments greatly appreciated.

by the way, this is to replace my swiss army knife i have had for over 20 years. it deserves to be retired now. those knives were amazing! you wont beleive this, i sharpened the 440a blade 3 times in all those years. looks brand new. i have no idea how such a tool was made of such cheap materials.

thank you,
holdanedge.

Hey hae...
It all depends..

Which one is more expensive and has the better resale value..

Because I'd be selling it and buying a Sebenza anyway....:)

JUst playing with ya... :)

Handle like sandpaper - well, at least it isn't slippery. ;)

You own Sebbie and won't use it? :(
I think that's misuse (again IMHO) and it's crying there alone.

EDC under 200 USD? Oh boy, there is much to choose from.
Here's a couple of examples:
BM 814 (maybe my all time favourite knife though it isn't very pretty)
BM 690 (knife can't be much more beautiful than this is :) )

Just my $00.02 here, but your EDC is (for me anyway) like eyeglasses, they're with you all of the time & why would you want to be reminded that you chose "2nd best" everytime you put your knife in your pocket. The pleasure of owning & carrying a good knife will long outlast the initial sting of the expense. I'd go w/ the knife that you think would perform the best, pleases you the most aesthetically & fits reasonably within your budget. Also factor in the amount of cringing regret you would experience if you would need to really use it hard. Buy quality & only cry once.

Hi holdanedge

I have both a 705 and a mini grip and for EDC I would go for the griptilion every time.

The 705 is a great little knife but can be very uncomfortable to carry especially IWB. It sits a lot higher than the griptilion becaseu of clip placement which does not help either.

Since getting a sebenza a month or so ago my griptilion is the only folder that has not been locked away for the moment

I dont like "plastic handles" as a rule but the one on the grip is very good and it is the smoothest opening and closing knife I have ever known except my big lefthanded AFCK.

my 2p's worth

thank you guys for all the replies! i think i figured out what i want!
a bm721. it seems to be shaped like the griptilian. it doesnt look like sandpaper, and is better knife all the way around(at least judging from the materials used to construct it). please let me know if am wrong about this before i waste an extra $80 on it!
heres the only problem! i refuse to purchase online. so my luck finding one may be dismal. if i can, it will be with me by 9pm tonite!
otherwise, its the cutsie grippy. will i look like a sissy if i get the purple? :)

now, some of you may have misunderstood me. i was not concerned with price. well, under $200 us. i could always loose it. that should buy a plenty good edc.
also, i dont think all of you understood what i will put this knife through. this is no gentlemens knife! i could care less how it looks.
my sebenza is for that, and to keep it looking that way i will never use it. some things i collect, some things i use like i hate them.
this knife will be for the latter. it is for very heavy utility only.
but, it must still be inconspicous. therefore, the knife that gets the oohs and aahs from my dinner guests will not be this one. esp. after it's first week of use. ugly.

thank you,
holdanedge.

uh oh, i just got realistic. the bowie blade on the 721 is not exactly condusive to heavy duty utility use, is it?

the 705 feals like sandpaper and is to narrow for me. go figure, the only other one with g10 that has a smooth finish(735) would be easy for my large hand to slip.

looks like its the mini griptilian. i guess benchmade really has something here. i was afraid it was no good because it is so cheap. but, it really is THE utility knife. sure, there are great knives for lots of other purposes. this one looks like my new edc. i just hope the quailty is there. i mean for $70 it could be hit or miss.
maybe they figure "make it cheap so people will buy it, then when they abuse it 'till it's death they'll be back as a repeat customer". if that is there marketing strategy it sounds ok to me!

if i am making a big mistake here, someone please try to stop me asap! i will leave to go the mall in about 3 hours.

sorry to make such a big deal out of something so little :)

thank you,
holdanedge.

I think that the Griptillian is a great choice. I've owned a 730, and wasn't blown away by the cutting performance. Everything else was great, but the grind was too darned thick to cut well. I've handled a Griptillian, and was very impressed by the quality for that low price. I'm also a 440C fan. It's nice and easy to sharpen.

i really appreciate all of your replies!
in about an hour i will go to the store. i plan on getting the 556 mini grip.....if they also have 721 i will look at that too. although, i doubt i will like the blade on the 721. the 730/735 is out. i have heard a number of people that werent that impressed with it. besides, it really doesnt "sit" well in my hand. i just wish the mini grip had g10, so it was more expensive. silly me, i posted in another thread that g10 is not always better than hybrid plastics(zytel/noryl). i truly beleive this.
it is a shame that i (as many people do) feal that if i didnt buy "the more expensive" one i didnt get the better one. why can't i just accept a bargain? it wouldnt be the first time a manufacturer produced a product of lesser cost that rivaled/surpassed their products of exceeding cost.

ok, i will let y'all know how i like it later today!

thank you,
holdanedge.

argh! i am sorry to keep pestering you guys, but.....
i am at the mall(brought my laptop). turns out the mini grip is way to small for me to get a grip on! no pun intended. the big grip is too big to fit in my pocket! the only one i can figure i might really like from benchmade, they don't have! it is the aformentioned 721.
i located a 721 about a three hour ride away. is it worth it? i don't know if the bowie blade makes a good heavy duty utility design?

other than that i will have to look at something other than benchmade. but what? gerber, no way. buck,no. kershaw, illeagle......

i could just get a "beater" sebbie. lol.

on a side note, those of you worrying if g10 is "better" than zytel/noryl. i "pinched" like 10 knives at the store and both materials give quite a bit! the only ones that don't are aluminum/titainium with stainless liners. but these get all dented and scratched. more tradeoffs.......
