BM Presidio 520:
pro - axis lock, spear point, thick blade
con - aluminum handle/liners

BM 710:
pro - axis lock, g10 handle with titanium liners, B2 steel
con - almost 4 inches (I'm in IL and don't want to push my luck), don't find the blade too pretty.

Spyderco Paramilitary:
pro - strong lock (supp. as good as axis?), s30v steel, g10 handle
con - I don't find it too attractive, (is the lock as good as an axis?)

Microtech Mini SOCOM Elite (manual):
pro - BEAUTIFUL knife!... simply beautiful... love the blade shape
con - liner lock, aluminum handle

What about the BM705. Smaller than the 710, good steel, g10 handle, no recurve.

I own both a BM 551S Griptilian and BM 710S. I like them both A LOT, but carry the 551 more as its smaller and lighter and also legal her in Colorado with its 3.5 inch blade. Both are required for your collection however. :)

Hmm. The 705 sounds interesting. Could that be next?

BM 705 is a good idea. Its discontinued from the factory, but I'm sure some sites sell it.

I'm hesitent to buy a knife that isn't from the manufacturer's site or from pvk.com (shown on site, guaranteed in stock). I tried to buy a BM HK axis manual from 1sks.com and they never called or delivered. I finally called and they said it wasn't in stock and they couldn't find it. Canceled the order and made me mad for waiting 3 1/2 weeks.

I'd say the Paramilitary. The lock is great, handle is very comfortable, legal blade length, good steel, and even though it's not the prettiest knife around (most Spydercos get that complaint) once you start using it you'll appreciate it. Spyderco's blades are function first, form second and that's not a bad thing. If you don't plan on actually using the knife very much or at all (strictly self defense) you might want to go with another one of your choices. You might want to check out Al Mar, too.

I love my para, and I'm going to recommend it. It's almost as good as the axis lock, the S30V leaf shape blade cuts better than anything I own, the handle ergonomics are fantastic, and personally, I think it's beautiful. The main issue with the para is if you need something smaller as it's a physically large knife and will monopolize your pocket.

I love Benchmade also, so whatever you get from them is going to be fantastic. I'd like to suggest a D2 Grip or minigrip also.

Doesn't sound like you've handled these, so go to a big knife store and play with a few. I really recommend you try the para in real life, as you need an appreciation for its size and shape. A very hit and miss knife.

I think the ParaMilitary would be the best cutter of the knives you listed.

My second choice would probably be the mini Socom. The last mini Socom I saw was a frame lock, not a liner lock.

I don't really know anything about the 520. I've handled several 710s, and don't care for the handle design or the thickly ground blade.
