I have a few Busse and Busse kin knives that have been users and I would like to refinish them with a nice powder coat.

So my question is will powdercoating a knife @ 400 degrees for 30 minutes ruin the heat treat or temper of the blade??

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out with this. I was told that the temper wouldn't be affected until around 700 degrees.

Thanks in anvance.

It depends on the steel and length of time.. some steels people say to draw back the temper 1, 2, or even 3 times at between 350-500F for 1 hour intervals usually.. depending on the steel.. my guess is that it will CHANGE the temper (make it softer), for most steels, but might not ruin it at only 30 minutes. Find out what sort of steel they are, and someone with more experience here should be able to tell you more specifically.

I can't think of any steel offhand that will be negatively affected by 400F. That's about the starting range for barely tempering most steels at all. As for time, 3 days at that temp won't hurt it any more than 30 minutes.
It's extremely unlikely that 400F will harm your Busse blades, but I could be wrong because I don't know their HT protocol. The handles, that may be a different story. You should ask in the Busse subforum: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/713-Busse-Combat-Knives
