Okay, up until now most of my self-defense time and money has been spent on learning to responsible handle firearms. Now that I've found what I'm most comfortable with in the world of firearms, I'm focusing my attention on the world of knives. I've dabbled with knives for a while but I want to really learn more now. I'm hoping to pick up a small fixed blade and a couple of folders in the next couple of months, but I'm having a real hard time deciding what to buy, so I could really use all of your opinions.

In the small fixed blade category I'm looking at the Fallkniven F1 but don't know much about this knife other than that it's the perfect size for what I need. It seems to come in ATS-34 and VG-10 steel but I don't know which is better. Your thoughts on this knife would be appreciated.

In the folder category is where I'm having the most trouble. I have carried a Spyderco Delica since way back in high school but these days I find myself yearning for something different. However, I feel that bigger knives or "tactical" (I really hate that word) knives will scare people at my job on the campus of the university where I am a student (I use my Delica quite a bit). At the same time, I wonder if the Delica is enough if I ever have to use it in a defensive scenario. I have traveled through many cities and several airports while carrying my Delica and it never seems to get a second look (or sometimes a first) from security personnel. My cousin however is heavily scrutinized when he tries to pass his black coated Benchmade Ascent through security. I suppose an encounter with law enforcement would yield similar results. This is what keeps me from buying an AFCK, Spyderco Military, or similar knife. So, do you think I should just stick with the "go-anywhere" yet slightly tiny Delica? Or should I go with the larger, probably more effective, but more likely to raise eyebrows AFCK, Military, etc...?

I realize this is a long post, but I would really value any input you can offer. Thanks.

Delica is a great knife. If you do want more you could start from checking out CRKT M16. It's very cool looking not too large and not too expensive.

Well,
First, you need to find out what the legal carry blade length limit is in your state.
Then you should decide how much crap from sheeple your willing to put up with. You know...you pull out your Delica sometimes to cut string or something and some S**t-For-Brains sarcastically asks "who are you gonna kill with that thing?" sort of nonsense. If you don't care about that sort of thing, carry the largest knife you legally and comfortably can and to hell with the smart ass, SFB wuss's.
I like the Benchmade Axis and the REKAT Sifu (a really BIG honkin' folder!)and the Carnivour myself. Mostly I carry the Sifu in my right pocket and the AXIS in my left. If your a Spyderco fan, then you should consider the Military, Starmate and the Wegner. All are Liner-Locks, but they are top shelf in performance with nary a failure. At least mine are.
Hope this helps.

Let me tell you about my SIFU!

Whew! What a good question. For a small fixed blade, I'll give you a couple of choices. Depending on blade length desired, I'd go with a Griffith Patrolman or SUB Cadet; Neil Blackwood makes a cool Small Hunter and will put holes through the scales and tang to lighten it up; if you can find a REKAT Utility they are small, inexpensive and well made with a cool sheath too; finally, the Spyderco Moran gets good reviews, although I've never handled one. For a folder, you have even more choices. I'd stay away from serrations due to airline reg's, and if you are concerned about scaring the sheeple I'd also stay away from recurve blades. I don't really give a darn what people think, so I carry the REKAT Carnivore, although I fly with a Sebenza. I also alternate between an Emerson CQC7, Spyderco large Wegner and G10 Rookie. Don't forget about a neck knife-the Emerson La Griffe is an awesome CQC knife, as is the Newt Livesay Woo. Finally, the Benchmade Pardue 350 plain edge is a sweet little knife, it looks too pretty to scare anyone, and is fairly priced.

Remember, the knife you carry is the knife you'll use when you need it. If you are likely to not carry a larger, more "aggressive" looking knife somewhere, then it will be worthless to you when the chips are down, because it won't be with you.Carry the knife that you are likely to have with you when you need it.That may mean one old faithful that you carry everywhere, or different knives that you carry in different situations.

For a small fixed blade, check out www.griffithknives.com There you will find a variety of knives to suit just about any need. Also be sure to check out Ray Kirk at www.tah-usa.net/raker , he makes one of the coolest little neck knives around called the 'lil blue II. As mentioned above, if you can find a Rekat neck knife (discontinued I think) that is a good knife.

As for folders, if you are comfortable with the Delica, it is a good choice. Want something bigger? As mentioned above, the Military, Starmate and Wegner are all good choices.

For the folder I would go with a Cold Steel Voyager http://coldsteel.com(for a FREE catalog)
or a Cris Reeve Sebenza(if you can afford it)

For the fixed blade...

In many colleges and universities (ie: schools) ANY knife can be considered a weapon and hence cause trouble, even if the "local" knife laws say something else.

This probably won't affect you if you're careful, but it might be worth considering when choosing your knife.

Fixed Blade.....

Not just because these knives are Benchmade (which is reason enough), but because of their qualities....

The fixed blade Nimravus can be had in two different sizes, two different steels (ATS-34 or M2), and comes with a very nice kydex sheath.

The BM730 folder is an awesome knife. The new AXIS lock is very strong, the blade's action is buttery smooth, and the overall ergonomics feel right!

And if thats not enough....They're both Elishewitz design, and for the money seem to be a outstanding bargain.

The pictures don't do these knives justice. Find a knife shop and handle them.

Repeat after me...

"Gottahava730"..."Gottahava730"...."Gottahava730"!

"Gottahava730......Gottahava730....Gottahavafixedblade....." I just can't do it captain....lol.

Not a bad looking blade but I would definately go with the Nimravus first.
If price is an issue check out John Greco, great knives at one helluva great price.
I know there are many others to look at but that is where I would go first.

Good luck,

Roy

Keep the Delica. Maybe carry one on your left and right side. You could also get an Endura if you want something alittle larger than your Delica. Nothing like a serrated Endura in your right pocket, and a plain edged Delica in your left.
Is the fixed blade going to be a every day user, or an "emergency only" knife?? If its an every day user, get the Fallkniven F1 in VG-10. If its an "emergency only" knife, get the F1 in ATS-34.
The main thing is get a fixed blade you'll want to carry, and fits your hand.

The Fallkniven F1 is an excellent choice! I've just started my Fallkniven collection (I hadn't inteded to start a collection, but I like the first one soooo much....). I am much impressed with VG10, which is what all my Fallknivens are made from. So far, I can't distinguish much difference in performance to ATS34, but the knives are still new.

As far as folders, an uncoated Benchmade Ascent in 3 1/2" drop point blade won't cause much undo attention, and will even pass airline restrictions provided it's not serrated.

As far as folder...go with what works! If your Delica serves you well, stick with it!
If not, avoid purchasing anything with a black coating if you are to be traveling-they tend to be more aggressive looking. Also, as usefull as full serrations may be, try going with a straight blade or plain edge, just keep it sharp! Teeth too tend to add to the aggressive demeanor of a piece.
I rec'mnd any of the mid-sized spydie lock backs, and all of REKATs products; locks are tough and blade configurations are endless!

For a fixed blade, tanto design is good for defense, little else. I purchased a recon tanto from Cold Steel a while back and it is great, just too big for this application. If money no problem, try a mini-tanto from CS. The BM Nimravus is nice as well, great sheath. For a true defense piece, can't beat the Hobbit Warrior from REKAT...just to damn intimidating to play off as a box opener!

In my opinion the best way to deal with sheeple is to carry two knifes. I have the smallest SAK made (the one with the scissors) attached to my keyring and that is the one I always use for string or if someone wants to borrow a knife. The scissors are convenient to trim the moustache and the occasional "grandpa" hairs sprouting out on my ears now.

Then another knife for your other purposes. I have had a Military and Starmate and they are good knives but in that price range I prefer an M2 AFCK. For a little more money, a MT SOCOM is a good piece, its what I carry now.

Hi JMB: Being also from Minnesota and not living too far away .. I'd stick to the Delica plain blade too although mine carries a full set of teeth! Even as peaceful as the delica looks - a Deputy Chief from Shakopee and a Carver Deputy I know commented "that would go through a ballistic cloth vest like a hot knife through butter" ! Rules I'm aware of state under 4 inches is probably ok but there is some "wiggle room" in that too.
I've carried the delica as well as occasionally my standard through Airports - with very mixed reactions while a gerber L.S.T. isn't even looked at - suggestion is to tuck some bills into the pocket clip and try to pass it off as a money clip = never tried it. I agree with the logic the knife you are carring is the one you'll use when needed.. stick to what you like and are comfortable with for a folder.
The fixed blade is another story - you won't get it through an airport - but if you want to try - the Stiff Kiss -WRAPPED handle is about minimum and not too expensive.. I don't own one but the handle looks light to me.. I prefer a KA-BAR - about 1958 vintage - unfortunately my son appropriated it and loves it.

that's what sons are for I guess .. I have not carried a fixed blade since I turned in my Gerber Mark II over 30 years ago.
Good Luck and enjoy the weather !

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm thinking that I'll go with two folders, one large and one small. I really like the sounds of the Axis Lock knives from Benchmade, but I have to find a store nearby so I can try a few out first. I'm thinking perhaps a BM710 and a BM705 would make a great set. I would get both blades in the satin finish because I think guns are meant to be black and knives are meant to be....well.....not black. I figure the larger one will be for social purposes, and the little one will be my airline companion and working knife. I was also thinking about going with an AFCK and a mini-AFCK but I noticed that the mini's blade is over 3".

That BM730 looks like an outstanding knife, but I have a few questions about it. First off, can you get the handle in any other colors than purple? I mean, I love my Minnesota Vikings as much as the next Minnesotan, but a purple handled knife......c'mon. Also, does anyone know if they are planning to make a sub-3" bladed mini version in the near future? That would be great.

Also, what are the best places to buy knives on the internet? I only have experience with knifecenter.com, are there others with better prices or selection?

Thanks again for the responses.
