Hello!
I ready for my first Buck, but I can't make decision which model to get - regular with 420CH, custom with BG-42, Bass Pro with 154CРM or Cabela's with S30V... Which steel is best in you opinion?
Please, please help me to choose one.
And Happy New Year!

I think that the Alaskan Guide Buck 110 is probably the best deal around right now.
The S30V is simply outstanding!

But the Custom Shop can offer you more options than just blade-steel.

BTW, I think that I like Buck's ATS-34 better than I like Buck's BG-42.
It just seems easier to get a great edge on it.

Welcome, That choice is just too difficult....get all 4 :D You will be pleased with any of them and all of them.
Allen is right, the AG 110 with S30V is the best deal around.

For a first one, I'd spend $29 at Wal-mart for a 110, and then use the snot out of it while cogitating on a spendy one to purchase.

I agree with Scott, get all 4. ;)
But the Cabelas 110 is the best value around!

I think powernoodle has made a very good suggestion;
as has Scott Hartman

depending on your cash position

- and in the meantime I'd order (I already did - more than once ;)) - a custom in BG-42.

I must respectfully disagree with allenC in that I like the Buck BG-42 slightly better than the Buck ATS-34.
But they are both top-notch steels.

Hard to say, depends on cash flow. (buy them all if you have the money:D)

Great move to buy a "standard" 110 for $30 or so to make sure it fits you and your carry mode. I LOVE my stag/damascus 110, however, I only carry it in uniform since that's when I feel comfortable wearing a sheath knife.

I wouldn't rule out the 112, fits some peoples hands better. Also, try a finger groove. I thought I would like it. However, it wasn't for me (grooves too close together for me).

Great thing is that there is a Buck for you, just may take a little time to figure out which one is best.

Thank you all for answers!
Now I think more on custom with BG-42 and fingergrooves.
Please, what is your recommendation of handle? I would like to have it with some natural "bone" but not with wood. What do you like more - Asian Waterbuffalo (not smooth), Brown Elk Horn or Sambar Stag? Is Waterbuffalo realy like Impala horn?
I tried to find here any better photos then they have on official Buck web-site, but don't see any.

I really like the water-buffalo horn scales alot, but overall, I prefer the flat sided scales a little better.
So my next custom shop 110 might have the smooth WB scales.

Here's a few pics of my rounded water-buf BG-42 110....

Here you go MHM,

Groved Buff, AG Sambar Stag, and an Asortment of Elk scales.

for a first 110 don't buy on looks alone!!!!
buy a wally world best value and USE the snot out of it ~~~
as said some like 112 better my bro does... too small for my hands
if it works for you then go for snazzy looks...
no need to collect some thing you don't like to use i say ,,,
dont collect for investment either,,,, gold does better
i have been a 110 man since 67 ... used them hard too
now have over 110 of the pig stickers ...
some are even good looking !
but all will serve as damn good users!
another great user is the 426!!
many times over looked but like the gock of bucks
built light for lotta use and easy to clean up...
i have one in damascus blade dress and it looks so hight tech
with that black layered blade and black one piece handle!!
s30v is one of the best steels to get, the top in MHO..
a buck light with s30v would be a ideal damp location knife...

Unless you want to go with a Custom Shoppe 110 with Sambar Stag, finger groves, and a BG-42 blade, I would go for an Alaskan Guide 110. The S30V steel holds a great working edge and is fairly easy to sharpen.

Alascan Guide is very attractive knife. I think you may start with it. I think that 110 from custom shop with BG-42 also pretty good deal, especially you may chose different handle and Nickel-Silver bolsters.

Thanks, Vassili.

When you think about it you need TWO... A EDC {every day carry}, 30.00 wally is perfect. Then go buy a DUC {dress up carry}.Go for broke on that one...

as mentioned above trot on down to wally world and plunk down your $30 and pick one up. if possible handle a couple so you can pick a good one and annoy the pimply faced neo-goth working behind the counter. then use it like you stole it. after that you can see about getting a hooky dooky 110 from the custom shop. you shouldn't spend big bucks on a knife until you know you'll really like it and only time will tell that. good luck.
disclaimer - this is in no way a slam against pimply faced neo-goth wal mart counter workers in general, i just got one the other day and had to vent, a little.

Thank you all for advices and recommendations!
I ordered one with BG-42.
What do you think about some custom file work on back spring and blade top - is it possible to get it from Buck shop?
Could you please show some picures with good custom file work on back spring and blade top?

I have a smooth Water Buffalo 110 w/BG-42 & NS bolsters and I like it so much, I won't use it! I only fondle it! (I just did!) :D There's something about those glassy black scales, so warm and snugly in your hand... :):p

But a word on the finger grooves...The "production" 110 & 112 have differently spaced finger grooves than the Custom Shoppe knives...The production FGs cut into the bolsters, but the Custom Shoppe FGs stop short of the bolsters...The production FGs are wider spaced...more comfy for large hands...

I don't have any pics, but IIRC, Mikey posted a comparison of the two some time back...(I think it was Mikey)...

My first was an over the counter 420HC. I'm now thinking of getting my first custom. I use my 110 every day and have decided to get a collectable. That may be the way to go. Get one cheap , use it, and see what you think. My custom will probably be BG42. I have not decided on a handle, but after looking at the water buff, I think I'm leaning that way.
