Greeting's all.
i need some "Help" here im working on a match pair of full damascus knives for a customer that i had 1 blade "Split" toward's the tip in the edge quence process . i checked the temp and found it was 1600 plus a little so it shouldn't have been too hot . steel's are 1084 15n20 .like a crack except straight . what happened ? the steel was forged , anealed, shaped up a bit , hand sanded to 220 prayer's were said and everything but the tip 1/4 just "Split" did i do something wrong ?? did i offend the god's of the forge or something ? my quench oil is hydrolic jack oil .

My guess is that when you forged the tip in you pushed the outside edges together .Basicaly making a "U" shape at the end of the bar, this then closed up and everything looked fine--ONLY--It needed to have been re-welded at the tip so the cold shut welded together and since you probably didn't see this happening it didn't show up untill after the quench when the two smaller pieces warpped a little. This can show up in a carbon blade but you usually see it.This is why people will cut the cornrers off the bar before forging the point. To stop this from happening either use a BIG hammer to squish it down to start as the light hammer only moves the outside of the bar and not the center,Or hit the corners back into the bar as you forge the tip in to shape thus stopping the little shut in the point.Or once you get about half way to the point cut about a 1/4 inch or so off the tip then proceed to keep forging in the tip..
Hope this makes sense to you....I learned this from experience--you know, the hard way..

Bruce i forged the tip only until it deformed then ground it in the rest of the way. i don't like to just forge the tip , many times they all look like "Bowie Point's " or a "Tanto". i will shape it only until the metal Buckles onto itself then grind the rest of the way. i just don't know what happened ?

Guess it is just one of those weired things that happen..Just grind off that part and re-shape the point and finish out the knife:D
