I bought a flash II almost a year ago. I never used it that much, just light cutting, but now there is quite a bit of blade play. I took it apart, cleaned everything and nothing worked. any ideas?

I hate to tell you, but as far as I know there's nothing you can do. I have that knife as well, and there is a fair amount of blade play on mine too.

Buying a new one would only start the cycle again. This is just my personal opinion, but I think this was one of their first endevors into the assisted opening folders, and there were a few things they could have done better. I have several others from SOG, and none of them have the same blade play. They seemed to have eliminated that issue with the newer models.

That's good to know because I am thinking about buying a Desert MAGIC assisted opening from sog but didn't know if I would have the same problem

I thought the MAGIC was from Smith & Wesson........

Anyway, that problem shouldn't happen too often. Of all the assisted opening knives I have, the Flash II is the only one that's had noticeable blade play after extended use.

what i meant was that because my sog has blade play im looking at that now. but was wondering if you knew about other sogs without blade play

Oh, sorry, I can be a little slow sometimes. ;)

What features are you looking for, and what type of work do you want the knife to do? The Trident and Twitch are both really good knives. The thing I really like about the Trident is that it's offered in several different blade designs (bowie, tanto, partial serrations, ect), and the fact that it has the groove in the handle so you can cut fishing line, cord, ect without having to open the knife. But if you want to tell me what your looking for in a knife I'll see if I can recommend a SOG to you. Also, what price range are you looking for?

Well, the good news is that most of the SOG knives in the A/O line are under that price. Several that I looked at were: Aegis, Trident, Twitch, and Twitch XL. All of them are good quality knives, at it really comes down to features.

The Aegis is made of AUS 8 steel with a 3.5" blade. It has a safety system similar to the Flash, with the red=ready switch. The blade (at least to me) resembles a chef knife. It looks like it would preform well under pretty much any condition. Since they took the name from the US Ballistic Missile Defense system as well as the word meaning shield in Greek, I'm assuming they consider this a personal defense folder. The shape of the blade would work well for this task as well as general cutting.

The Trident is also AUS 8, with a 3.75" blade. This seems a little more general purpose than the Aegis. The handle has Digi-Grip patterns that help keep it in your hand even in wet conditions. I've used handles like this on other knives, and I can say that they work as well, if not better, than advertised. Like I mentioned before, the handle also has a groove cut in it so you cant clip line, rope, ect without having to open the knife.

The Twitch comes in three different sizes (Twitch I, Twitch II, and Twitch XL). Now I'm sure some people will disagree with me on this, but these seem geared a little more towards the light folder market. They have aluminum handles instead of the Zytel grips that are on the other two. They would work well if your only cutting mail, boxes, string, ect. I don't believe they would be your best choice for anything other than light cutting tasks. Again, I've never used these, and other people may disagree, but that's my opinion.

There are several other models in the SOG A/O line, but those are the ones that stood out to me. Each model has several different options on blade coating and style. My personal favorite is the Trident with Black TiNi coating and Tanto blade. But that's just my pick. All of these knives are in your price range, the Twitch being the cheapest ( starting at $70) and the Trident being the most expensive (starting at $100).

There is a cure...get yourself a Spyderco and live happy:-)))

Just a joke..SOG make good knives. Are you sure that this is not some sort of defect? Some blade play with auto and assisted openning knives is present at all times, but if is is too much...maybe there is something broken.

I've cleaned my SOG Flash II twice. I always just plenty of oil on the coil springs (2) and on the pivot. Tighten the pivot till the action slows then back it off a small amount. Mine has zero blade play and fires nicely. Good luck...

Haha, I love Spyderco knives as well, but since I don't think they make A/O I didn't include them. Great knives for the price though.....

I would be interested to see what the dates of purchase are for each of us, and how long we've used them. Mine was one of the first ones made, so I assumed the problem was early production issues. And I used (and abused) the crap outta that knife. I was working in a warehouse as well as a riding stable, so it saw a lot of hard work. But since his is only a year old I'm starting to wonder about it. Has anyone gotten one recently? I'd hate to have the OP go get another one and run into the same issue.

a year was an estimate. it was my first "high-end" knife.

I can't remember exactly when I got mine, but it was many, many moons ago. Honestly, if you like the knife a lot, try getting a new one and see how it handles. But I would recommend that you at least handle some of the ones I mentioned, just to see if there's another model out there you like better. But ultimately it's up to you, and we all have particular knives we like, so go with what you like.

Age is not really a factor when it comes to problem solving (experience on the other hand is). Higher age does not always come with the best solution. I think that the way some young boys and girls think and find solutions to problems is amazing.

And i'm sure that you know more than you think:-))

Just an idea - could there be a problem with the thread of the pivot screw? Or maybe the washers (if there are any) are not thick enough or deformed.

it was the first knife I ever took apart. it still takes me almost an hour to put back together

Hey, as long as you can put it back together, that's all that counts!

MB1, that's a good thought. I'll have to find mine and take it apart to see if that's the problem with mine.
