Hello I am new to not only this forum but quality knife use. I am currently looking for a nice nife to take on my third tour overseas. I would like a quality blade that will also ride on my body armor. I am currently looking at the Wilson Tactical Model 5, Busse ash1 variant, and the Merkworks vorex chili. I like the Busse the best but at 12 in I think it is to big to carry every day. I have never owned any of these brands so I am open to all advise. I already have a quality auto opener and a gerber tool. I know I will probably never need it but if nothing else its a good reason to buy another toy. Oh and I am leaving in March so I have to decide quick! Thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome.

I'd also take a look at R.A.T Cutlery.

http://www.ratcutlery.com/

They have their own subforum here if you have any questions.

You mentioned Busse...they also have their own subforum here if you need more info. If you go to the exchange, you'll see a ton of fine Busse knives for sale from good people.

Here is the Busse subforum

Here is the where they sell Busse and Busse-kin knives (Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard knives).

Roger I would love to have a Busse but I am unfamiliar with their models. Do they have something like the hellrazor in a 5-5.5 in blade? I also like the RAT 5 but I dont know if I could get one before late March. Thanks again! RLTW

Good questions...I'd head to the respective subforums and ask those questions. You'll have answers pretty quick.

Thanks for all the help! I have learned more about quality knives in the past few hours then I ever thought I could. I see now how this becomes so addictive. The joes over in the subforums have squared me away and I am going down the path of enlightenment. Thanks again! RLTW

At the risk of being politically incorrect and honking off everybody here who thinks you have to spend in excess of $400 to get a good knife, I agree that the Ka-Bar 1217 USMC knife will get the job done just fine. So will the even less-expensive Cold Steel GI Tanto. If it's purely a commando-style knife you're after, you can still find some of last year's production run of Gerber Mark IIs also, and the sheath for that even accepts Molle fasteners.

Hey, it's your money, but you don't have to break the bank to get a good knife.

I know my old Ka-Bar did just fine for me. While larger FBs are nice, I really liked the size of the 5" blade on mine. It was big enough, but also small enough to haul around easily. Plus, 1095's so darn easy to sharpen with just about anything. For the $, they're hard to beat, IMHO.

However, the RAT/RC line are great, too. If the handle's comfortable, a Becker (Old Camillus or the new Ka-Bar ones) are alot of knife for the $, too.

Good luck in whatever you end up getting & take care out there.

Check out Kershaw's ZT line.
They have a nice selection for Police and Military use.
There is a link in the Kershaw forum for their site.
