I Just purchased my first Emerson knife.. Now..here's the bad part..When the knife is half open, if you shake it, it sounds like a can of spray paint..this can't be normal. Sounds like something is loose somewhere.. Seems like I can move the blade a little as well..should I take it apart?? Not sure what to do..I really need the knife and don't have the time to send it to Emerson right now..should I just buy another knife to save time or can I fix the problem myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. By the way..it's a cqc-7 bw (not sure if that helps)

This is normal
What you are hearing is the Stop pin. You have nothing to worry about. If it really bugs you, you can send it in or just give them a call.

You could also take the knife apart at a later time and put a small piece of paper on each end of the stop pin for a more secure fit. It really is nothing to worry about, it's more annoying than anything. I don't understand why they leave the factory this way.

O.K...That's a relief!! Now..how about the play in the blade..seems like I have some..is this also normal? I really appreciate everyones quick and knowledegable input..Just want to make sure this knife is good to go..it will be put to use..Thank's again!

What kind of play? Side to side.
You can tighten up the pivot screw a little.

Yes..the play was side to side..just tried that, I think that took care of the problem..There must be a happy medium with that screw..not so tight that the action suffers but not loose enough for the blade to have to much play..still getting used to the knife I guess..Thank You to everyone for the input..really put my mind at ease..:)

For me, that happy medium is the amount of tension I can get with my thumbnail.

It seem's to me that if the screw is to lose it rattles more, and the blade moves side to side more. Also, when the blade is locked in the close position the blade can be easily pushed to touch the liner on the liner lock side (before I tightened screw) I guess I'm o.k...

STABMAN..not sure what you mean..I'm guessing your telling me the action should be fast without having to tighten that screw and making it slower?

I'm just saying that I've found with my two Emerson folders that the knife opens well and doesn't exhibit side-to-side play when I tighten the pivot screw the amount I can using just my thumbnail.
If I use a screwdriver, I find it's too easy to over-tighten the pivot, to the point where it won't "wave" open very well.

gotcha..yeah I noticed that..a little goes a long way..Thank's for your help..as I said..My first Emerson, so, just getting used to things I think. :)
