I got this knife as a gift for Christmas of last year. I'm trying to figure out what it is...anyone have any idea what make/model it is? The box it came in was totally blank, but I'm assuming it's Japanese since it seems to have hiragana on the blade (pardon me, but my japanese absolutely sucks)

Edit: pardon the crappy pic. The blade is actually fully flat-ground, and polished to an almost-mirror finish. It's just the reflection makes it look black (and helps the characters stand out)

The top part looks chinese. After the logo, I have no clue. 18 something.. (the big characters, 1st two)

Okay, the first two horizontal characters say, "Produced in China."

Then I'm not too sure about the third vertical character. Depending on what it is, the four large characters could say "Eighteen famous/grand/known works" (i.e. works of art), or perhaps "Eighteenth son production" (maybe produced by some company known as 18 Sons).

Can't read the Japanese. :)

The final group of Chinese characters seems to read, "Special steel". Hmm...

Yeah, my bad, my knowledge of asian lauguages isn't so knowledgable.

Anyway, thanks a ton, esp to AlphalphaPB. Although I still can't find anything about the knife.

I can read the Japanese.
The first two horizontal characters mean "good production" or "made by ...".
The vertical characters mean "made by Jyuhachiji"
(jyuhachi=18, ji=letter; character).
Jyuhachiji is a manufacture's name.
But, I don't know this manufacture.
I think "Jyuhachiji" is small, local manufacture.
The last horizontal characters mean "stain-less special steel".

I searched the company. It wasn't a manufacturer but a trader, owned by two Chinese men, located in Chiba, Japan. They import abrasive, stationaries and other things from China.
