David Schott made... Some specs:
Blade: 5160/52100/15N20 “Alabama Damascus”
Handle: “Lion’s Blood” Amboyna burl. This variety of Amboyna burl is cut from the very edge of the burl and has amazing action and a deep red hue to it.
Length: 7” overall, 3” cutting edge
Pins: Nickel silver/copper mosaic and nickel silver thong tube
Sheath: 9oz, deep red/brown dyed, hand tooled. Waxed stitching.

odd question... is this "sole authorship" since the blade is from Alabama Damascus?

Great looking knife!

As far as I know, the knifemaker is considered the maker and sole author whether he forged the steel or not. I'm assuming the maker acquired the steel but shaped the blade? Others collectors may feel differently, but I'd bet most knifemakers don't. ;)

I'm sure he shaped the blade, did not mean to imply otherwise. I was mostly curious about the semantics of the term. Thanks.

Hey just saw this! I think the postman came today!

I probably wouldn't claim "Sole Authorship" unless I actually forge welded the steel myself. Some would go so far as to say that unless youre actually turning screws yourself on a lathe and making the mosaic pins yourself, its not sole authorship. Theres some grey area in that part, but for damascus, it should be made by the maker if he claims sole authorship, IMHO. Did I do that somewhere, because I want to make sure there is no question about that, as I did source the steel in order to keep costs down.

I'd call this one "Handmade Custom."

That is one of the most beautiful knives that I have ever seen. My compliments to the maker and buyer.

I should not have raised the issue of sole authorship in the same post as this.

The postman did come, and I am a happy camper. I told Mr. Schott that this was "sculpture that cuts". I posted a review in the review section, so I won't say too much more here, but I do feel very fortunate to have this knife at hand.
