Greetings you all :)

I'm a Spyderco fan pur sang, but with the upcoming knife restrictions over here, I would very much know something about those traditional knives. There are so many options that it's a bit confusing for me :o

I would very much like to know what is the best, stiffest, most solid slip joint that I can buy.
I absolutely hate blade play. :barf:
I would like the blade of stainless steel and at about 3 inch or under. Single bladed. No SAK please :)
Preferably all serrated, but I've never seen a serrated traditional knife so far.
I hope you can help me out on this.
Thanks very much for reading.

You're not going to find "traditionals" with serrated blades for the most part.

I'm going to move this over to the general forum but leave a link in the Traditional Forum in case our members can come up with a knife that fulfills your needs.

I'd look at a sodbuster or similar but it's not a serrated knife. (However, you can put a coarse edge on it that would have a "toothy" character.)

(Queen has a single blade hunter that might be worth looking at as well.)

Hey brother!!! Like Blues said, you won't find any slip joints with serrations. Maybe you could contact a custom maker and see if they would make you one. I don't know what else to tell you. Let me know if I can help.

Blues is correct, a Case Sodbuster Junior in SS or CV sounds to be your best bet, it costs around US $22.00 on Ebay and is excellent value for money....I picked one up last week and am very happy with it.

And if stag rings your bells, you can try a German bull or look about for a Case in stag.....or re-haft in desired material.

Ps, what are the restrictions...condensed form please !

They are planning to forbid carrying "easy to open" blades. :barf:
That means we will be not allowed to carry knives with holes, thumbstud or thumb disk.
We'll still be allowed to own them but not carry them in public :grumpy:
They haven't metioned locks so far, but that's only a matter of time I'm afraid

Why no SAKs?

They are non-locking, sheeple friendly, stainless for the most part, and they have utility blades including serrations.

My best advice:
Move to a different country.;)

Since you are a Spyderco fan you may already have one but there is the Denmark Penknife.

You sound as though this is a fait accompli. Why aren't you lobbying your politicians and getting other like minded citizens lobbying instead of taking these restrictive changes lying down. If this is important enough to you get organised - contact organisations like AKTI to seek their advice and develop effective strategies and campaigns. And good luck

Actually....this is not certain yet. They COULD be interpreted this way.

As for lobbying, we're working on it.

Hey Spydutch, try a Case or Queen Sodbuster. Queen uses D2 steel... if you prefer that. As for serrations, I'm sure there's a few guys willing to "butcher" a traditional for you -- have you seen on Spyderco forums the photo of a Spydie with custom serrations that look just like the Spyderedge? I don't remember who did it however.

these are pricey;get an automatic; which opens manually or auto.many of the good ones look like a regular slip joint;however there is sutle auto option.

Just a thought, have you ever been searched by police? I haven't, because i don't go around commiting crimes, so i never encounter police. I live in the UK, and carry what i please. The intention of those laws was never aimed at people like me, they exist to give police the power to conviscate knives from people they suspect are carrying for dubious reasons, and really don't affect law abiding people.

If you would consider two-bladed models, Great Eastern Cutlery makes some with outstanding quality and 440C blades. The Great Eastern brand is 440C, while the Northfield and Tidioute brands are 1095.

I live in the norther part of the Netherlands and do a lot of hiking there. On the countryside you rarely see police and if you do, than I am never worried. Those guys have better things to do than checking if hikers, cyclists and many other people are carrying an illegal knife. The laws which will be introduced will make certain knives illegal, but I agree with Dave H that the police will not check everyone, only people at specific places (cities, bars, hospitals) and people who they suspect are carrying a knife as a weapon. But, that is just my opinion as a Dutchman from the north. I can imagine that when you live in the big cities in the western part of the country, the situation may be totally different.

Anyway. There are some nice folding knives that you still can carry. The Swedish company EKA Knivar makes good quality knives, I have an old Swede 60 with plastic handle and a smaller Swede 88 with wooden handle. An other brand which has some nice looking folding knives wooden handles is Cudeman, which is Spanish, but I have never tried these knives myself. I think that a Buck 112 Ranger will also remain a legal knife, I am thinking on buying that one later this year.

When it comes to the sodbuster pattern, there are also European made knives, like those of Friedrich Herder. Adola, Homeij and Herbertz also sell knives of that pattern. I have a knife of Herder, which is really good, and a couple of knives from Adola, which are strong, but hard to open. Maybe that is because I bought them recently, I own my Herder for about 15 years now. If you type in "werkmes" in Google, you will find such knives.

I understand Spydutch on this one. It's not that we get searched by the police often. It's the very thing that carrying a knife shouldn't be an illegal activity. If you get pulled over for speeding you don't want to get an additional ticket and confiscation for carrying a knife.

So he wants to stay within the legal limits. So do I. So far I've not carried an illegal knife. Although if the knife laws don't become clearer I might every now and then.

In the meanwhile Queen is a good suggestion as well as the slippy Byrd. Are you on the dutch forums? If so we have someone importing queens into the NL for close to american prices.

I'm not a serrated fan...but if I were, I'd go for that byrd someone pointed out.
