Hello! I'm considering (almost convinced) picking up a Magna in Zytel for an EDC utility blade. I have sone soem searches already, so I thought I'd ask for some up to date info. How is it? Can I replace the Zytel with some micarta that I have here easily? Is the grind thin enough so that I have a real cutter? I have an AFCK and a Sentinel, and I want something with geometry designed for utility chores.

Thanks!

I had one and sold it. It is a very heavy knife that does not lend itself to edc. Good utility blade. The liner lock is suspect like many liner locks on medium priced knives. Aus-8 blade takes and holds a decent edge. Overall, not a bad knife for the money if you don't have to rely on lock integity.

Hi Crayola, I owned a Zytel Magna which I bought from A G Russell's up until about a month
ago. I sold it to a deer hunting buddy of mine for the upcoming season. What did I think of
it? It is a DARN GOOD knife. I personally like Aus-8 steel and the Zytel added a lot to the
comfort of the knife. Did Kit Carson design a good multi-purpose FIELD knife? You bet
he did. Would I carry it everyday? NO, to heavy / to much knife for everyday utlity. Why
did I sell it? Two reasons....It is a liner lock (not left hand friendly) and ,more importantly,
I don't need a knife that big anymore since my huntin' days are over. Is the knife a good
value? Yes, most certianly. Outdoor Edge did a fine job of balancing value and price.

Thanks for the info so far. I am looking for a large folder (I have one 3 incher that is too small for me). I have 2 benchmade folders, oen AFCK (3.9") and one Sentinel (3.75). The AFCK has a large handle, which I like. I seem to have sorta big hands, or at least I prefer larger handles (and definitely larger blades.) I can't afford 420V or talonite, so I've kinda settled on AUS-8 for now. Slicing tape, paper and some cardboard doesn't seem to dull it fast. Also, I want somethign with a nice high grind line, to have good slicing geometry. The Magna seems to be what I'm looking for. I am going to carry a small fixed blade in the enar future on occasion anyways, so the size and weight of the Magna doesn't sound too bad to me.

Keep the info coming!

They are good buys for the money if you are looking for a large folder at a very reasonable cost. They are well made and I would not have sold mine if it was a shade smaller and lighter. I really liked the way the carrying clip was nested in the handle. I have half a mind to ask Kit what it would cost to make me a custom M4 with that feature in a ti handle...

Hope that helps

The Magna is a tank. I own both the Aluminium and Zytel scaled versions. Both are rock solid and a bargain for the price considering the workmanship. The Zytel version has slightly thicker liners than the aluminium version to give it added strength and you can get them in plain edge or Kit Carson's reverse serration pattern. You won't be dissapointed.

Anyone care to comment on how it holds up to hard use? Anyone have any lock problems?

Hi,

for a year and half Fred Perrin have been using a Magna as a folding throwing knife in demos.

The knife is an heavy missile which can do big damages to its target.

He loves the knife and he could not manage to break either version of the Magna.

The lock never failed his hard Perrinausorus treatment.

cheers,

JM

Sounds like a winner!

With all the excellent things I hear about the Magna I am surprised that they dont recieve more attention.

Well, I am definitely going to get one now. TOugh, large and good grind lines is what I was after. I'm gonna replace the zytel with g-10 or carbon fiber scales, so that should be cool. Now if I can only find a good place to order one! Shipping to Canada seems to be quite expensive (I've seen $14-$18 for shipping!)

Hmm.... folding thrower? WOW! I REALLY want one now!

Crayola, Don't know if I'd replace the zytel with something else. The scales on the Magna
are a bit unusual due the the recessed cip. While they may look the same in thickness they
are not. If your right handed this knife will nestle in you hand like it's glued there. Us leftys
get to adapt once again, but, it's not that bad. While new scales may jazz it up a bit I think you'll
like it so much you'll be to busy using it to take time to re-work it. By the way...I ordered a
new zytel Magna to replace the one I sold. Didn't really know just how much I did miss it.

Good choice Cray. All this talk about them makes me miss my old one. I had planned on going over to AG Russells Teusday to pick up a knife. I think im also going to have to get another Magna while I am there.

Tightwad mentioned the clip side of the Magna. He makes a good point. The way the handle is made to accomidate the clip would probably make changing it a real chore unless you can live without the clip.

Wonderful advice, my friends. I called a B&M store today, and they can order me one in no problem in zytel. I'll definitely play with it before making new scales, and if I don't like the scales I make, I can just slap the Zytel ones back on!

Then again, I could just call Gary up and get a sheath for the knife..., or Normark...

Damn, I can't wait to get a folder that slices great, yet is worthy of the name Magna!
