Hi,

I am looking for a new knife to be carried for self defense. I prefer easy opening, but not necessarily any new-fangled 'auto' opening mechanism.

I would like to find a cross between two knives I currently have:
Kershaw Ken Onion Leek and Kabar Mule.
I like the Leek becaue it is easy to open and light, but the grip feels too small in my hand for me to feel like I have a comfortable hold on it.
I like the Mule becaue the grip feels nearly perfect in my hand.. the right size and shape. I get a good hold on the knife.

Please recommend a knife that is lighter than the MULE, but of simliar dimensions. I want it to have a clip to go on my front pocket. I'm right handed, but carry my knife on the left side (right side is for firearm!) I'm not looking for anything expensive, just a good, trusty knife to carry for self defense.
Thanks!

All you need are these

In my opinion a knife for self defense must have a tacky secure grip even if wet (or bloody as the case may be) and also have a handle made such that it allows some type of a guard to prevent the sliding up of your hand in a hard thrust or stab. For that reason I'd go with something like:

In a liner lock if that is your preference, an Emerson CQC8 or 11, maybe a 13. If too big look at the 14 and 15.

Other fine choices new to the market are the Kershaw/Zero Tolerance 0400 and 0200 models.

In a frame lock perhaps something like the Emerson CQC12 or the Zero Tolerance 0300 series.

Axis lock, look at the HK34 also referred to as the BenchMade 14200. (this is a great knife by the way. ) Smaller brother is the HK29 but the handle is a bit slick in my opinion for SD.

Lockback look at the Spyderco Manix, or 83mm Manix. Both offer great grips, strong locks and superb blade steel.

Nested compression lock by Spyderco ala the Para Military or the now discontinued Yojimbo are also good candidates for SD knives.

The para is an excellent choice, but I think it probably ways more than the mule. You might look into a spyderco centofante or native.

Take a look at the axix lock Banchmade 710. Mine is th D2 and I love it.

But for self defense, I'd carry a small handgun, not a knife for a backup.
