Looking at Hertz, Enterprise, Alamo, and Thrifty. Looking for a small car for a 5 hr drive, something reliable.

Does one of the companies stand out in either positive or negative light? For example, I know to stay away from U-Haul and use Penske instead for moving trucks..:)

Thanks.

I've used a few different ones over the years, and can't think of a reason to recommend one over another. I used to work at Avis (part time), but that was almost fifteen years ago.

If I were looking for a rental car, I'd go to the company that either, a) had the best current price promotion, or, b) had the least undesirable car.

National is a good rental company.

Don't rent a compact . . . spend the extra twenty bucks and get something FAST. Be sure to pay extra for "I beat the hell out of this rental car" insurance.

Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis frequently tack on hidden fees, or may charge several hundred dollars on your card as a "deposit."

Ive used a few of the companies you mentioned .If you can find an Avis go with them they are are best I have used personally.Good luck

I always use Enterprise, because they will transport you from home, work, garage, etc. to the Enterprise location, and back home etc. after you are finished with the rental. Mighty helpful. Also have unlimited mileage.

Thanks for the advice.

Is Enterprise the only one that will pick me up? That would save me $$ (no airport parking/cab fare).

Do companies give prices over the phone? Can a person choose a brand and model of vehicle from several brands and models in the same size category?

Thanks.

The last time I used Enterprise, about a month later a mysterious charge for something about $250 (I don't remember the exact amount) appeared from Enterprise on my bill about a month later. The Enterprise rep on the phone was not familiar with the charge code and had to look it up. It was for -- I kid you not -- windshield washer fluid. I did not use the washer -- even the wiper -- duing the time I had the car. $250 is a lot for wiper fluid. Either that thing has a 100 gallon wiper fluid tank or they're filling their wiper fluid dispensers with Château Lafite. The woman on the phone was also shocked by such a huge charge for such a silly thing. She had never even see anyone charged for windshield washer fluid and wasn't even aware there was a code for charging for it. "Oh, I'm sure it's just a mistake," I said, "and I'm sure you'll reverse that charge immediately. Yes?"

"NO! I am not authorized to reverse any charge. You will have to talk to someone at the office you rented through to get the charge reversed."

So, I called and spoke to one of the customer service people in the local office. He was equally surprised by the charge. But, he also refused to reverse it and referred me to another person who was not in the office at the time.

When I finally got ahold of her, she was equally stumped by the charge by also refused to reverse it saying that I would have to talk to the office manager... who was not in the office at the time.

When I finally got ahold of the office manager, he was equally stumped by the charge but also refused to reverse it saying that he would have to "investigate" it. "Investigate?" Investigate a $250+ charge for windshield washer fluid? What is there to investigate? Windshield washer fluid is like a couple of bucks a gallon retail at the local auto parts store. Even Mercedes-Benz only charges like $10 to fill the windshield washer fluid... and you get coffee and a pastry while you wait. But, no, he refused to reverse the charge without investigating.

So, I called my bank. They e-mailed me a Visa dispute form. I filled it out and e-mailed it back. They said it could take Visa up to 90 days to investigate. A couple of days later, I got e-mail from Visa saying that it was obvious to them that this charge was bogus and unauthorized. Visa reversed it. Visa charged Enterprise something like 15% (I don't remember the amount) for a "reversal" fee. Visa penalized Enterprize something like $35 (again, I don't remember the exact amount) for an unauthorized charge. And Visa put a black mark on Enterprise's merchant account (the more of these a merchant has, the higher the rate he pays).

A week or so later, the local Enterprise manager called me up saying, "I'd like to ask you a few questions about this char...."

"No need! If you will check your merchant account, you will find that Visa reversed the charge, penalized you, and charged you a fine! I'm happy. Good Bye."

So, I suggest NOT using Enterprise.

We booked an Alamo car online with Priceline or something. What we put in their search engine and what they booked us were very different. The manager at LAX took care of us very professionally and with great service. He upgraded us on the spot, and when we got home had sent a $100 dollar coupon for Alamo, and a $100 refund. Don't know if this is typical, but they'll have our rental car dollars from now on.

Rental car services are very fungible across companies. It's more important to know who NOT to use, as I always take the cheapest unless it's with Fox in California.
