Hey guys, my friend's 11 yr old son wants his first knife after he saw mine camping. I'm going to introduce it to him and go over safety, etc. What would you recommend as a decent first knife for the kid? He wants a camping fixed blade, blade about 6 or 7 inches, and wants it to "look good." I would add decent steel and a sheath to the mix. Their budget is about $50. Please also recommend a store to buy it at a good price. Thanks

buck makes classic fixed blades.

kershaw recently released a couple hunting style fb's.

I should add, please also let me know where you would buy the ones you recommend. I don't know my online stores very well, so if you can point me to legit stores that have good prices, that would be great. They're willing to buy locally, but all we have here is Academy. Thanks

Check Knife Center for the Bucks. :)

Check the knife case at Wal-Mart - they have some pretty decent blades for a reasonable price, including several different Buck knives that should meet the boy's interest.
It's hard to beat a 119 Special as a first fixed blade knife if you're set on getting him something that large to start with.
The knife case at Academy should have some decent offerings as well. they should have a Ka-Bar combat knife under $60. I'd suggest a Becker, but the handles on those will likely be too large for an 11 year old.
You might also check the dealer's forum here - most of them have a link to their website, complete with pictures.
other good online sources include Ragweed Forge and Smoky Mountain Knife Works.

In that price range I would have to agree a Buck is probably going to get you the best quality for the money I have put togeather a List of decent ones around your price range all from Knifeworks.com a pretty reputable dealer.

Buck Ergohunter-Select Skinner

Buck Kalinga Pro (I think this one is probably the best of the ones near your price range and looks wise for an 11 year old)

Buck Vangaurd (Carried this for a long time as my hunting knife)

Buck Special (Biggest blade of all I listed)

Buck Woodsman

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, guys. Remember he needs a 6-7" blade and he plans to do some light wood chopping/fire building with it, so a little heft wouldn't hurt either. The knife I was thinking of for him was an Ontario Rat 7, but they're a little pricey at $90, so maybe something similar to that for $50. Otherwise, the KABAR or Buck 119 could fit the bill.

In a nutshell
- Fixed blade
- Blade length 6-7 inches
- Looks good
- Decent steel
- Decent sheath
- $50 price

Since this is for an 11 year old who is unlikely to take good care of the knife, I would pick stainless steel. Everything points to Buck 119 Special:
- Fixed blade
- Blade length 6"
- Classic good look. Satin finished blade and polished guard & pommel.
- 420HC steel by buck is decent
- Nice leather sheath
- $48.54 at amazon with free shipping

I'd also suggest keep an eye on the exchange for deals on user blades - if need be, you can paint it with krylon and bake the finish to harden it.

The Buck 119 or the KaBar would be my vote. Probably the KaBar if you want something for chopping since it has a good bit more heft to it than the Buck 119 in my opinion. The only thing I would say to consider is how large his hands are, because I remember I got my KaBar a few years later than my Buck 119 when I was 12-14 and the handle still felt quite hefty in my hand. I mean, it felt secure, like if it would slip it would just stay in my hand but on a lower part of the blade, but it always felt clumsy to actually use for some of the more precise cutting tasks than the Buck 119 was, but the 119 has more of a "countoured" ergonomic handle to it. On the one hand though, if his hand doesn't fit a 119, he won't like it at all, versus having to grow into a KaBar.

I can't really imagine chopping with the Buck 119 very effectively though, so I would say to get the KaBar Fighting/Utility knife. 7", 1095, black oxide on the blade so it will be easy for him to take care of, and you can get it in leather and teach him something about caring for that so he can have a knife with character later on, or just get one of the "black" models with the kraton handles. I personally liked the leather sheath with the stacked leather handle, but the kraton ones are nice too. On top of that you can get a Kydex sheath or a combo edge. Most of them run more in the $60-$65 range though, whereas you can get a Buck 119 for very cheap at WalMart. I think the last I heard someone say was $40.

I don't think you can really go wrong with either of those knives.

Mora's got a boy scout knife with a nice wood handle and a finger guard. I'd check out a Dave Farmer Real Deal, Blind Horse Tiger Knapp, Buck Paklite Skinner, a few of the smaller Bark River models, etc. Hopefully that should get you on the right foot.

Ontario spec plus or the classic Kabar gets my vote.

Why such a big knife though? hope he's got big hands......

That is nice

That would be my pick of the liter too.

A 6" or 7" blade means very limmited use. I'm not sure I would do that to an eleven year old kid. Buy a good 4" blade that can be used for everything and talk about the right tool for the job. Buy him or her a hawk or splitting wood.

Seems like a huge knife for a first fixed blade, but if you're set on the length a Kabar is probably the best option if you want to chop, plus what kid doesn't love the way a Kabar looks? :)

I'd think a buck 102 or 103 would be just about perfect, or the short kabar as I think it has a slimmer handle. Kid will need pretty big hands at that age for any real chopper, why not a smaller blade and a hawk or something? Theres a whole lot that can be taught with a tomahawk.
