Hi all,

I currently am enjoying my Axist lock Mini Grip - but i'm looking to get something else, maby a bit bigger, but still good for EDC (folder).

I'm thinking about Spyderco specifically, since I already own an Axis lock.

I read good things about their Manix, Delica, ENdura, Military....

Too confusing!  Too Many choices! :p

Any recommendations?

thanks a lot.

some additionnal information would help...
How much do you want to spend (50 usd, 100 usd?)?
Which kind of handle do you prefer?
Manix, Delica, ENdura, Military are all condered "good value for the money", so anyone woudl be a good choice.. :)

There is a Caly Jr. out there with laminated steel. ZDP 189 between 420J2. Why not do yourself a treat and pick up this premium steel and try it on. Also, the Calypso Jr design is spot on by itself. It's great.

yep, might be a good option, but the Caly Jr. blade is more or less same size than mini Grip 555....
and steelguy was mentioning "but i'm looking to get something else, maby a bit bigger, but still good for EDC (folder)."
otherwise, if size is not so important, i'll go myself for the caly Jr; (by the way, i have ordered one ! :D )

I would def say on this purchase I would be willing to go up to 100$ - but as always, the cheaper the better :o

The caly Jr was also looking pretty cool - lot of people seem to be liking it

Bigger size was just a thought to give me some variation

Another priority was ergos...
The minigrip is nice - but I've noticed that the resting place for the index finger isn't as pronounced as some of the spydercos im mentioning

I hear so many good things about the knives that it's making it really hard - The manix and military and endura seem to be about the same size..

Seems like the Delica and Calypso are comprable in that respect also.

That Caly Jr looks pretty nice., despite the size...hmm

Go somewhere that you can handle each knife you're considering before you buy it. You can see how it feels in your hand. There's such a huge difference looking at a picture and actually handling the knife. I've ended up dissappointed after buying just from seeing a picture and reading other's reviews. A great knife isn't so great if it doesn't feel good in your own hands.:)

If you want something for EDC that's a little bigger than the Mini-Grip try the Paramilitary. I love mine, the lock is great, the blade size and design are very utilitarian. The G-10 handles feel great in my hands.

My second choice would be the Manix (it is my first choice for tough work and outdoors activities). Probably my favourite Spyderco. Tough as nails!

If you want to spend less, the FRN Endura with a VG-10 blade is your best bet. You can get it for around $45 from some online retailers, less than half the price of the Manix. It's one of the best "bang for your buck" folders out there.

Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with any Spyderco knife.

The Endura and the Military have big blades in relatively flat, lightweight handles. The Delica is a small Endura. The Manix is massive.

Definitely all different ergonomics. At that level of quality and functionality, how they feel in your hand is a big difference among them.

Can you tell us a little more of what you want in your new knife ?
By what I undestood, it might be a Spydie, blade bet. 3" and 4", any lock, any handle, any price ?
Too many choices...
Well, I would sugest a Paramillie or a Military. They're both great EDCs.

Spyderco Centofante III is an awesome EDC knife. I got one a little while back and love it.
One of the most overlooked Spydie out there.

I will just say here again that the ZDP-189 Calypso Jr is the sharpest Spyderco knife I have seen yet out of the box. This is coming from a guy who has a lot of Spyderco knives which are known in general to be sharpest out of the box production knives.

You cannot go wrong with any of your other choices either. Least expensive would be the Delica or Endura -- they can frequently be had for under $40.

you can't really go wrong with any of the above mentioned knives. That said, the new zdp caly is hot right now, and I do love my manix.

Hi
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions so far

I think in terms of a lock - most spydies are lockback right?
I'm definetly not too knowledgable when it comes to locks...i've read some of the stuff on liner locks, how well made liner locks are great but otherwise no go.

The Caly Jr. in burgundy does look really nice - especially that color..

I think you all are right- I can't go wrong with any of these choices

I'm thinking since i am going to EDC this (switch it off with the minigrip) I shouldn't get something too huge - probably keep me from edcin it..

I don't really need a bigger size knife for anything specific....so I guess a smaller one would do just fine until something comes along...

I think I should take some of your advice and test it out at a store.
Thx again all.

The Lil' T is still available in some stores. Great knife, extremely beefy but not too long. But if you want something a bit bigger, the Manix is great.

Locks: If you are going to use your knife for light and medium duty, every well made lock from a respected maker should be fine. As Mr. Glesser has pointed out, reliability is more important than ultimate strength. Some people dislike linerlocks, mostly due to personal experience concerning lock reliability.
That said, a good old fashioned lockback is likely going to be at the upper end of ultimate lock strength and so are Axis and Compression locks. Both knives I suggested happen to have rather impressive lockstrength ratings.
