Please school me on knife sharpening

Hello, i was wondering if you guys could help me out and give any tips or advice you can think of for how to sharpen knives. I have an small Arkansas stone and three DMT stones for my D2 knives, and i will hopefully be picking another one up soon. What kind of stone would be good for all around sharping? Also i just can't seem to get them sharp. I would like to try this without any tools such as a worksharp or lanksy system. I like the idea of free handing it, but im gonna need some help from the knowledgeable people of bladeforums.

You'll get a lot suggestions here but you have to find what works for you. I like diamond stones the best but also use a washboard/sandpaper set up I bought from a forum member.

No matter what you use it takes time to and practice to reach proficiency.

Your setup is fine. I would just reccommend practicing your techniques and maybe trying others. If I can spray wd-40 on a dished out combo oil stone and shave when I'm done, you can do the same.
