Please school me on the Buck 903 Bowie...

I ordered a Buck 903 Bowie knife off of the "bay" last night.
It is described as being in mint condition, and is one of Harley Davidson's offerings from Buck's Custom Shop circa 1984. The blade's etched engraving has an eagle head with Harley's brand and the year the firm was established. The guard is brass with it's serial number (it's one knife out of 3,000 made).
Anyhow, I know that there are a lot of versions of the 903 Bowie, and would like to know how many were made of all versions combined?
Also, when were they discontinued, and if any were made again for limited runs after they were discontinued?
What would be the general consensus on the overall build quality of these knives?
Have they become more desirable as a collectable, or have they stayed pretty dormant on the secondary market?

I went on YouTube to see if there were any videos put up on Buck 903 Bowie knives, and I must say, I was surprised to only have found one. I didn't find the young man that did the video to be very knowledgeable about these knives, but I give him an "A" for at least offering and covering a model of knife that nobody else seems to have done or care much about.

Based on pics of the Buck model 903 Bowie knives that I have seen online, I think it seems to have the most iconic contours of any of the Buck made Bowie knives, or at least to my eyes. So, I would have thought that the model would have a bigger following. I guess my tastes may just be quite different than most πŸ€”

Anyhow, any tidbits of info concerning these knives would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance 😊

Here are some pics of my incoming Buck 903 Bowie that were on the vendor's online sale of the knife...

Here are a few pictures of a recent purchase I made of another Buck model Harley Davidson Bowie knife. Although it too has a great look about it, I think the lines and size of my incoming Buck 903 are so much more of a classic Bowie throwback. Even the coffin shaped handle takes it's cues from some of the 1800's Bowie knives.
With that said, don't get me wrong, I really do like this one too! πŸ‘πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‘

Btw, the display for this Bowie shown directly above, came with a blue felt lining. I simply used a red satin material to cover over it by tucking it alongside the edges of the original blue material. In other words, the red material can easily be pulled back out, to expose the original πŸ‘

I don't care for blade adornment.
I like most of the 900 series bowies. If Buck didn't do most of the big bowies with blade etchings I would have more of them. It seems that the ones without blade adornment are priced higher, which makes it more difficult for me.
Here's a thread I started...

I don't care for blade adornment either, but if I were a Harley-Davidson man looking for display pieces, I think both of these knives are very well done. The red satin material looks great too. Congrats on your new addition! πŸ‘

Thanks for sharing πŸ‘

As for Bowie knives with and without etching on their blades, I tend to like both.
I do like it when a Bowie blade has patriotic or some other form of Americana etched into their blades, and that is likely because such adorning on Bowie blades goes way back to the 1800's heydays of the Bowie knife in America.
It is said that over 90 or more percent of Bowie knives purchased during that period, came from Sheffield England. And they coming in adorned with etched blades was very common, so I see it very fitting to Bowie Knives.
Also, although I am not a motorcycle guy, I look at Harley Davidson as a piece of our country's culture, of it's history... a piece of Americana.
So, yeah, I'm more than okay with such adornment πŸ‘πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‘

Interesting, thanks.

FWIW, if you are a Buck Collectors Club member, you have access to their web site and 'Model History'. It has info on most of the 900 series.

I went online and looked up "1984 Harley Davidson merchandise catalog", and found the Buck model 903 Bowie that I have coming my way. It's a bit blurry, but still cool to find it in there.
Wish I knew what they used to cost when they were being sold in 1984 by HD? πŸ€”

I was thinking about what I said about it being so common during the 1800's Bowie knife heydays for them to be adorned, including their blades having fancy etchings and such.
Anyhow, here's a picture I found online of an antique Sheffield England made Bowie knife of that period, (not mine, but I wish it was!)... These types of adornments were very much common and desired, and it is very much a part of the Bowie' history.

And again, that Bowie history is why I believe etchings on a Bowie, including on modern day made specimens like my incoming Buck/Harley Davidson model 903, are not out of place. I find it a rather very fitting trait that has solid roots in Bowie history πŸ‘πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

Here again are a few of my Bowie knives with such blade adornments...

Thanks again for the history, I understand that. I do have a few knives that have blade adornment. just not my cup of tea.

Yeah, I figured that you understood my opinion on the matter... I just wanted to express that opinion a bit more for those that may stumble across our discussion thread here in the future and be able to read a couple different points of views.
Sort of a posterity thing!
