Dear Forumites,

an Italian Custom Knifemaker I met, complained he tried to use CPM 440V and CPM 10V, in bars of 1 inch, and he had BIG problems to forge it.

Moreover, he wasn't able to work and finish them after the heat treatment, because they were too wear-resistent to be "worked" by abrasives he uses.

He really wants to try these alloys, but he needs some hints how to "work" them and where he can find some bars 1/6-1/8 of an inch.

Can you please help this Italian Knifemaker to "enter" the world of CPM alloys? If you want, you can post a reply here or send me a note at my e-mail address. I am sending him another e-mail to ask if I can post his e-mail address here.

Many Thanks in advance.

www.admiralsteel.com has these in various size's. i am a stock removeal maker but i don't think these a forging steels? if he is useing hand tools to rough finish it will take a while. :D those are tough!

Looking at the specs for them, it seems that CPM steels don't really get a benefit from forging, as the grain is determined and optimized as part of its manufacture, and most dependable sources that I've talked to have advised me NOT to forge it, as I could(would) burn out some desirable properties, and add many variables that complicate things further. Don't know what else you could do with a piece of it that size, though. Maybe get it water or laser cut?
