I have a very plain, what looks like an un serrated melon knife WITH A SQUARE bottom. Stamped Colonial Prov., RI
I cannot find a single one like it online...every single one I have come across had a round bottom. Total blade length is 8.25". Plain metal handle. No lock, it just cuts the one direction. Can someone help me identify this please. Just spent 3 hours looking and I'm getting frustrated lol thank you

Could be a "doctors knife".
The flat bottom is sometimes called a pill crusher.
Might try a search using those terms.

Drs' knives are usually shorter - I would call that either a Melon tester, or a Sausage knife!!
Or both!!

Me too. I'll see if I have any square-sterned ones.
Uticas. It never occurred to me to not call these melon-testers.

Though, as Charlie notes, the same knife is called a sausage sampler, and AG Russell calls it a fruit sampler.

You could try sending a picture to Colonial. They might be able to tell you what they called it, and the era it was made.

A metal-handled, long, thin, square-headed single blade!!
A Rose by any other Name . . . . . . . . . . . . 😋 🤣
