I've had an Emerson LaGriffe, Microtech Medallion, CRKT Peck, and an AFCK in a Sastre sheath (probably my favorite) but foolishly traded them all away. The Ronin is my first choice and I would order one today but have noticed some complaints about the sheath. I've also looked at quite a few others (and read many opinons via the search function) but can't seem to pull the trigger. I really want to buy a working system and don't wish to order/wait for a higher quality, after-market sheath. So, kind folks, please steer me toward a good necker with a good sheath that's adequate for the blade equivalent of a BUG. Thanks much.

I think the Ronin is a great knife but not a great neck knife. Its too heavy and there is way too much sheath for neck carry. Personally I think the Lagriffe is the best neck knife I have tried but you already know about that one. The falkniven G1 is a great knife if ya like small daggers but again IMO its a b it heavy for neck carry. The sheath is set up for that sort of carry though and it mayh be just right for you. The spyderco spot might be worth considering but I am not sure how available they still are. The CRKT bear claw was pretty good too though I traded up for the lagriffe as its thinner and has a more minamalist sheath.

some things to consider.

Personally the little knives sold by Cold Steel are my favorites as far as neck knives go. They are light weight enough to carry all day and not notice them. Others I've tried are just to dang heavy to really be called neck knives in my opinion. Those are more dangle sheath knives being sold as neck knives.

I like the Super Edge and the Ready Edge by Cold Steel. Also, the Hai Hocho is one of my most used knives in the kitchen but it could easily be a neck knife too. Generally I stay away from dagger double edge type of knives because they are illegal here but the Para Edge neck knife is very nice also.

I'm using the standard sheath, modified by cutting the sheath back to within about 1/8" of the blade-tip, and suspended by stringing the necklace through the two top-most eyelets. This raises the knife nicely, and resists twisting while carried.

I used tin-snips, making two cuts to form a vee above the knife-point, and a final cut to snip the apex of the vee off just above the knife-tip. I used a file and sandpaper to round the cuts to smooth curve and radius the edges. It carries very comfortably. Takes about 20 minutes max.

Hope this helps!

I find that any necker I wear is more confortamble when I wear it in the modified way:
Dont wear it like a standard necklace, which I find make is sway too much and leaves a big print. Instead, wear it like you would a messenger bag (slung over one shoulder and dangling under the opposite arm.) You can then center the knife under your left pec for right hand draw or under your right pec for left hand draw. I hope this helps, I never wore neck knives until I tried this way.

Interesting idea Roodog. I may indeed try that carry method.

And thanks all for the thoughtful replies. I'll check some of the CS offerings, the hideaway, sheath reduction, and certainly give the LaGriffe another look. That's one I definitely should not have traded.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

I like my Emerson LaGriffe best of any neck knives I have owned. Right now I am keeping my open for reviews of the new Fehrman neck knife. It should be a great one.
