Please suggest long bladed knife ...

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I’d certainly appreciate it!

I’m looking for a fairly slim blade, preferrably in the tanto style, with a 12” long blade. Piece of cake? The trouble is my budget is $125 or less. Cold Steel has a 12” tanto, but it’s ‘San Mai III’ and WAY outa my price range. This will be used purely as a ‘home defense’ blade. Some of you have shotguns for home defense. I don’t use guns (present personal choice). So my “shotgun” will be the 12” bladed knife. I’ve considered a short sword, but any longer than 12” blade, and it becomes too unwieldy, in my opinion. Unfortunately the Cold Steel ‘Oyabun’ only goes up to 9”.

Any ideas? Or doesn't such an animal exist? Thanks!

Well, I could have sworn that Ontario made one in the size you want, but I guess I was wrong. I did find one with a 10" blade. http://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-ProductSpec?ONSP14

I know you're interested in a tanto style knife, but I think you should check out the khukuris from Himalayan Imports. They have a forum here, or if you prefer you can check out their site at http://members.aol.com/himimp/index.html They have this one khukuri, the Kumar Kobra that fits your criteria, sans tanto style of course. I have one. 20" long, it's light, fast, and tough. It has excellent balance and is easy to control. I have no reservations about being able to use it for home defense and I can testify to its ability to cut, as it has already bit me. Best of all, it is right in your price range. Drop an email to Uncle Bill, he'll hook you up. Hope this helps.

How about a machete? Tool of choice for violent uprisings all around the world.

Barteaux even makes them with tanto points.

Have you considered the surplus military bayonets that the various catalog dealers advertise? With $125 you could buy a few. For the purpose you state, these might just fit the bill.

Check out Becker line-up - not tantos but couple that would meet your other criteria.
Becker is absolute first-rate quality & they are designed for hard use.

Champion,
Check out this offering from CS's Special Projects:
http://store.yahoo.com/specpro/35ltc.html

It's not a Tanto, but it's got a 12" blade, is only 1/8" thick, and comes in under budget. Plus I think that it will do just fine for home defense.

Also, if you are interested in this, try checking out these prices:

Roger at www.knifeworks.com will take care of you. Same knives as everywhere else, only less expensive.

Mr. Campos(that post on the forums here) makes a few tanto defensive blades. I don't know if there is one that big that fits your budget, but his web site is worth a look.
