Please tell me a little about MY Old Timer

Hi folks. I've posted before, but never in the Schrade Forum. I received the knife pictured from my dad about a year ago. He bought it in Howell, MI in the early 70's and it is fast becoming one of my favorites. I have searched for info on the 165 but have not found what I am looking for. I am trying to learn where my knife fits in the production of the 165. The ONLY marking on the knife is the "OLD TIMER" insert in the handle. I'd also like to learn in what years what markings were used.

Thanks,
Greg

I don't know how to date it without any tang stamping. Maybe Codger has an idea of when it was made & why there is no tang stamp.

I have the same model with no stamp and have been told that it was a factory second and stamp was ground off. I can't see any evidence of that happening to my blade and after seeing yours, there may be more to the story.

I keep records of the ones I see on eBay, in addition to the twenty or so in my collection. Seconds of this pattern are truly a rarity (but don't get your hopes up for the increased value of one, if found). It is much more likely that your stampless knife either had an etch identifier for a special factory order, or was simply ordered stampless by Sears, Pennys, Wards, Belknap, Simmons, etc. A certain percentage of production each year was held back for warranty replacement of both regular production knives and special factory orders. Every so often, this inventory of knives was rotated out into production sales, either as production firsts, or later as seconds. I have several Schrade Old Timer patterns with no tangstamp. None show any evidence of stamp grinding (it takes a deep grind to remove the stamp and it is obvious). They are just a neat oddity, and without the provenance, seldom any way to determine the age. Yours is ground flat on the secondary grind which says pre-1991, and has the "Walden" guard, as I call it, so is relatively early in production. It fits with a knife of the time period you describe.

PS - An excellent example of an early 165OT by the way! If you get the urge to use it, consider buying a second one already used for that purpose!

Thank you to all. The best we can date the purchase of the knife is late 1971 or early 1972. It was purchased from either Baldwin's Hardware or Sutton's Hardware. And thanks for the advice Codger. I fully intend at keeping this one in new condition and looking for a used one to actually use. And by the way, there is also no serial number.

Upstream: Does yours have a serial #?

Codger: Is this common?
