G'day all,

Just wandered in yesterday, loooonnng way round via the HI website.
Wanted to introduce myself, some info in the profile.

I have a Khukuri knife, but really until I started reading about 3pm yesterday, didn't know bugger all about them. Ha, guess I still don't know bugger all, but learned a bit anyway : )
At least I'm sheathing it right now !! (I do like my thumbs.)

Well, I really feel the need to find out more about my knife, so I just set up a webpage tacked on my main site, so I could get some info and (small) pics there to assist.
: / Mmmmm, I feel this could be the start of a collection.

Ok, so if anyone feels like a bit of investigating, could you check out Khukuri and let me know what you think ?
I've listed about all I could think of that would help . . .

Cheers,
Les

There are a fine bunch of folks here and an amazing amount of knowledge.

Oh,BTW great handle also. :)

Welcome Les,

Looks like a serviceable little khukuri. I've seen a lot of those on Ebay with Gorka Army stamped on them. They're made by the thousands to sell to the tourists in Katmandu, but that doesn't mean that it's not a good one. Some companies call the slab handles panawal, HI calls theirs chiruwa. Personal preference.

Your's should give you years of good service, if the steel and heat treatment are good. You'll just have to try it out and see. If you like your's, you'll love the ones from HI, as the quality will be much better.

We have several forum members from Australia, but I don't know which part.

Again, welcome. Nice website you've got there. Interesting job too, bending glass.

Thanks for the welcome, stilgar and Steve.

Yeah, I found a lot of Khuks about, there must be getting a serious shortage of leaf springs over there by now !!??
I note that railway line is used too, so maybe there is a shortage.

So mine's definitely not a HI knife ? I saw similar there, but not in my specific size, suppose the age of mine (at least 10 + maybe 5 or more yrs) could mean it was pre HI ?

I will just have to try it out next time I take a chainsaw to a bigger branch, and give the Khuk a try with de-limbing (the branch, not me !).
Suppose that will tell if the tempering is done right . . . look forward to finding that sweet spot.

My Khuk has no markings, apart for the (seemingly) common blood line . . . suppose the age of it might mean it is at least not a modern tourist knife : )

Ok, so what's the best way to find the best HI knives ?
I wouldn't mind a smaller utility (baby chit ?) and larger knife for variety if collecting.

Also read a thread about custom handle timber etc. Aussie Eucalyptus might be a different and interesting material ?
If anyone’s interested, maybe I can ship a piece to the factory and see what they think. Suppose contact details are on the web.

Cheers again for the welcome and info.
Les
Help me find out more about my Khuk

Oh yeah, love working with glass too, thanks Steve. We make a lot of things for picture framers for display purposes . . . maybe I'll get into special display glass / cases for Khuks ? : )

Welcome to the Cantina/Psycho Ward Les.:D

Les it is possible that your khuk is a very early HI model back from when Uncle Bill was selling strictly villagers, long time ago.
But it's not really likely because due to the advertising costs that Uncle Bill had to absorb back then the khukuris went at a real premium and folks who bought them tended to keep them because of what they had to spend to get one.
And yet it would be hard to say one way or another as folks sometimes need money worse than they need part of their collection no matter how dear the cost was for a particular knife.:(

Welcome.

Ever notice how many forumites come from Australia?

munk

Yeah, we like our knives too !! :D

Thanks Yvsa and Monk for the further welcome.

Looking more and more like I'll just have to accept my knife was made in Nepal somewhere, by an unknown Kami(s), at some time. But at least a fair while ago, maybe before the big tourist trade began in them.

I find it amazing how they can be made by different manufacutrers and still look so similar (maybe there is some reselling going on there).

Cheers,
Les

Khuk pics and info here . . .
