First off, I want to apologize up front, for this long-winded post.
Please, tell me I was miss-informed.
I have heard that ONLY the Delicas & Enduras will be made with the SOLID ZDP-189.
If this is true, I am going to have to re-think my upcoming purchases of the ZDP-189 Caly3 as well as my ZDP-189 LUM.
The Caly3 with an uneven laminate line would be a shame, with a beautiful Carbon-Fiber handle, but I am NOT going to pay the high price that the LUM is going to sell for, (I am guessing about $150 to 200.)
I will forgive the black handle (the original green was so much nicer), (or a royal blue like the BM 921) but for that price, I had better see a knife with the hottest design and best materials, with the fit & finish as close to perfect as possible. - You don't buy a Ferrari with a custom paint job that has a very visible cosmetic imperfection.
All I want is the original handled LUM with solid ZDP-189, just swap out the blades (same with the ZDP-189 Caly3).
I don't mind having to buy an old Lum with green handles for the switch.
I thought the laminate ZDP-189 would just be on the cheaper knives (ex. FRN Calypso jr) as it doesn't need to be pretty, just great performance.
Save the solid ZDP-189 for the high end knives, for its perfect appearance, as well as the great performance. (which is why I spend the extra money)
I am already planning to swap the Caly3's ZDP-189 blade from the Carbon-Fiber model ( which I am on the wait list for) into the G10 handled Caly3 (that I already own) & the VG10 blade into the carbon fiber handle. (Assuming the tolerances are identical)
This will allow me to carry, DAILY, a G10 handled knife, that will hide the pocket wear, with the best steel on the market (as of right now) & save the Carbon-Fiber & VG10 for "Sunday-going-to-church meetings, where it won't get as much use & will be able to stay pretty longer.
I USED to have a carbon fiber Delica, but promptly traded it, as it scuffed so easily, that I would have had to baby the thing.
A Delica is made to be used HARD, while carbon fiber is not (if you intend it to stay looking good, which is why I spend the extra money)
Right now, I have the best blade grind on my (laminated ZDP-189) Calypso jr , the best steel on the (solid ZDP-189) Delica, it also has the best rough use handle with the liners & the best handle on the Caly3.
I know, my Calypso jr in laminated ZDP-189 can cut circles around my Delica in solid ZDP-189, but this, I believe, is due to the much thinner full flat grind.
Lastly, I am not looking for a fight, I think the Delica & Calypso jr, as well as the Caly3 are all fantastic (Hell, I own all 3 of them), but the Delica is more like a Cadillac Escalade (class & brute force) & the Calypso jr & Caly3 are more of a Ferrari (class, performance & grace) they just needs a bit more care in use, to not abuse it.
