Hello all, I'm new to the forum and was directed here from Somethingawful.

I recently purchased a khukuri on ebay (link below) after doing reading on different sites. Can any of you gents tell me if I am geting tourist trap garbage or a decent blade?

I don't anticipate getting into any jungle knife-fights, but as a Filipino martial arts practitioner, I'd like to know that I could bet my life on a blade like this.

Thanks very much for your help/advice. Finally, if this blade isn't razor sharp, do you guys have a sharpening guide for this kind of blade?

if it came from one of the major makers like khukuri house, or tora its probably decent quality.

it looks very similar to the one offered by khukuri house, though im not sure on the bolstered karda and chakma.

I feel a lot better now. Traditionally, these blades are sharpened in the villages they are made in, correct? Isn't all of this a matter of pride and tradition? I would imagine that if I prided myself on centuries of weaponcrafting, that I would only sell my goods in finished quality.

Also, how well do these blades hold an edge? How should I properly sharpen it if I'm not happy with the edge?

Thanks again for the insight.

The short review I just did on your seller and his feedback rating, tend to coincide, overall, with my limited experience in Khuks. I own only one and it was purchased in a US Embassy gift shop and is purported to be the basic entry level issue tool for the Ghurkas. Price was I believe around $32 US. The overall length is less than yours and the handle is wood. All things considered, I'd say if mine was fairly represented, then yours appears to be an OK value.
I'm not sure my rambling tale is of much help but there it is!

If you want advice from knowledgeable, friendly people, and access to the best khukuris in the world with a great warranty, go to the HI forum and I suggest doing a search on sharpening there.

2nd the vote on the H.I. forum.

Yours is not junk. It is not "Her Majesty's Finest"....but it's good enough for a round or two in the woods.

Opinions runs strong in the H.I. forum.....but even so, I think we would welcome a review of your khukuri. Enjoy it!
