Dear Aunt Knifey,

I recently purchased (6) Greco's and have a bid on another one...
and I'm looking into purchasing two more....am I OK?

What if my wife finds out? She's starting to notice all the boxes coming up the driveway.

Seriously, I'm in trouble-and I can't stop! Anyone have any advice on how to beat the heat from multiple-back-to-back-knife frenzies? How do you turn it off?

I keep telling myself it's OK-at least they aren't Busse's or Striders, and I am still under the limit on my Visa card....

what to do-oh-what to do....

Mongrel :)

ps-this is probably in the 'wrong' forum, hope I'm not in trouble, no pics though...:D

I've only managed to cut down myself. One thing that has helped me is that I am buying more expensive knives and other sharp objects. That tends to hold me back a bit :D. As for my lovely spouse, she likes my knife collecting a lot more than my gun collecting (I guess because it keeps me in the house):D.

Just smile at her and mumble something about "anniverseries." Hopefully that'll give you a couple of month's leeway...then just substitue Christmas/birthday etc.

That should by me some time BurkStar!

Thought I had lost my mind...wandering out in the snow winds howling with my hand out for penny knife...oh the humanity!

Hehheh...

So I have the groups permission to pursue my 'last two' purchases?

agreed?

good!

thanks-

Mongrel

Had the same problem myself, once. I found that if you get rid of your wife, you'll feel lots better about your knife purchases and, will have more funds available for same.

need the wife, I don't know how to cook or run the washer. and then who would take care of the rug rats? :D

Diversify? John Greco is the po' boy's knife maker man!!!

Besides, I couldn't make up my mind :D

:D OH MY GOD, you've gone completely [knife] knuts uh...I mean nuts.

I spend so much time in the dog house, I got a beer fridge out there and it's hooked up for cable. Only recently I was allowed back in the house (but not on the couch!).

Seriously though, I bought myself a Japanese laminated pearing knife that is signed by the maker.www.leevalley.com has them under garden and home or type in knives in the search windowwww.agrussell.com has nice ones too .I cooked for an extra long weekend. Foods that involved LOTS of chopping. I can't cook worth squat! But man that knife is sooooo sweet.

You can get her a personal knife too, that works but I wouldn't recomend getting her a cooking knife. That would be taken the wrong way, kind of like offering a neibor to dig a hole. You leave for a while and return with a large shovel and hand it to him. Saying "You will be able to dig more efficiently with this one. :p

This is my rationalization as well....ONE of my dozen shotguns far exceedes the value of my entire knife collection.(still growing)

Personally, I think some of you guys are nuts. Perhaps not clinically, but metaphorically anyway! You have to get control of yourself. What are your priorities in life anyway? If you're single, and can dispose of your income as you like, then so be it, but those who are married, and especially with children have got to get a grip sometime!

Knives are fun, I like them too, and like many of you I have other hobbies that have to be fed as well. At the same time, I've got to remember what my priorities in life are, and first and foremost they are my family (wife and kids), then my friends, and then my profession. After I've taken care of those things, I can think about my hobbies. Even then, I have more knives than I need (what else is new), but I have to practice some discipline all the same.

Sorry to be a downer here, but too much of a good thing is just that, too much!

Matt,

My home is paid for, my children have been college educated, and both my wife and I have good jobs.

I am 52 and two years ago I was ON TRACK to retire at 55.....THEN the bottom fell out of the stock market....it dramatically changed the time horizon on retirement as well as my outlook on life.

I took a two month leave of absence from work two summers ago and my youngest son (having just graduated from college)and I drove to Alaska, camping along the way.It was the trip of a lifetime and all a result of my new outlook on life.....

By the way...I still bring my lunch to work and my wife clips coupons.

It's OK, and it will make you feel better when you post a pic of that GRECO collection for all of us to see.

Thanks,

RattlerXX

Let's see if I've got this thing straight..........
Family (wife and kids)....Divorced 4 yrs. ago, she's in AZ.
Kids; both on their own and doing well.
Friends...................Always been pretty much a loaner.
Profession................Lost my job a week and a half before Blade.

What to do......what to do......?????????

GO TO BLADE WITH $3500.00 IN YOUR POCKET, BUY 3 CRK'S AND A STRIDER GB!!!!! What else!!!!! Heh, heh, heh! Discipline??????????

Hi G.H. Sorry I came on so strong there. So many people here are much younger than we are (I'm 51), and given your sudden uncontrollable interest, I assumed you were one of them...

I've been married 25 years myself. My kids are not quite out of the house (though one should be close), and the house is far from paid for. My wife and I too have good jobs, though I'll be out of work as of today as my latest contract has come to a close... That's a good thing for a while because it means I get to wear my FBs all day long every day instead of just on weekends
:)

As for retirement, I was looking forward to something like you were, but the market put a crimp in my plans too. My cash flow needs are still very high though (4 teenage kids (one a foster) and a house payment etc.), so I have to keep control of myself regarding discretionary spending...

10 more minutes and I'll be out of work for a bit... YAY!

Matt,

I stumbled upon this forum looking for information (via the internet) for a better EDGE HOLDING steel after returning from a week long hunting trip in northern N.H.

Little did I known that it would lead to becoming a member....I have found the imput from ALL the members INVALUABLE in helping me make my buying decissions....

I never realized the number of different steels available and their particular advantages.

The tests by Mr. Stamp have been especially helpful and I have found everyone's imput of interest as well....A GREAT GROUP OF FOLKS!!

BEST REGARDS,

GH

Just be glad you didn't RETIRE two years ago...then the bottom fell out of the market:)

Yes, new outlooks on life are great.

ah...this turned out to be quite an interesting exchange :)

@Rattler-you are gonna have to wait for the next two to arrive to complete my little 'family'. You started this anyway Rattler! It's all your fault sending me that mint MST!!!! :)

@Matt-I understand your concerns man. Take heart, I am in what I call my 'fun money' swapping mode. That is, whatever hobby is taking precedent gets the attention and the cash. I am 'liquidating' my other no-longer quite as interesting to me hobbies in order to pay for my re-current fixation with knives. So far I'm in the black! :)

I'm actually considering a 'Gold Membership' so I may better facilitate this....

Thanks for the concern though, you made some excellent points.
