I've hiked all over the Columbia Gorge and around many of it's waterfalls. In all the times I've been around them, even though I am an extremely strong swimmer and love to swim and dive, I have never been tempted to dive into a place like this. Nothing about it sounds like a good idea.

The Hood River County Sheriff's Office identified the man who died Sunday after jumping off Punchbowl Falls in the Columbia River Gorge as a 25-year-old man from Cincinnati, Ohio. Jason Endicott was among a group of five people from out of state who hiked up the Eagle Creek Trail to the top of the falls on Sunday. Four of them jumped around 5 p.m., said Matt English, Hood River County sheriff. One man was treated at the scene for hypothermia and had to be carried out. The other two walked out on their own. None was taken to a hospital, English said. The three who survived the jump were not identified.

Yes, it's beautiful. I find it heaven on Earth. Think before you jump though.

Heaven on Earth indeed; but have done a fair number of SAR missions there...
Absolutely correct in your "think before you jump?"

We were able to take a vacation to Kauaii a few years ago. We found one of the books on the hidden treasures, and hiked a trail down to one of the many beautiful waterfall/pools. We stayed a couple of hours and it never ceased to amaze me the number of people who would walk up to the pool, and either they or their children would just jump/dive off the top of the 20 ft falls without ever swimming down below at all. You couldn't see into the water enough to tell there were no boulders or logs. They would just walk up, drop their stuff and start jumping off.
