Just got a new plinker set up.

Nice gun. Ditto - moor detalez!

I just read an article on the S&W M&P.22. $600-and change for an AR-platform .22 rifle. EEEK! If you think that's plinking, you've gone beyond what most have the capacity to consider reasonable "plinking" costs. (It'd take you 2,000 rounds at current prices, and really probably close to 4,000 rounds when prices settle out before a $600+ plinker saves you money in .223.)

Dennis in MA - I consider it a plinker because it is quiet. I can shoot it and not worry about the sound of a 223 or the rolling thunder for 10 seconds after the 7MM STW. Any of the centerfire rifles I have are atleast as noisy as the 223. 22's are plinkers but for that I will take a ruger 10/22 any day of the week.

17hmr one of my fav. mines just a savage.. love em.... one of my most useful rifles

I have a savage 17 hmr (probably my favorite and most used rifle). I would not say it is "just a savage"

This weatherby is going to have to shoot through the same hole to beat the savages. If it doesn't then I am going to have "just a weatherby":thumbdn:

I need to get out and sight it in.

I really just had a moment of weekness:D

I was thinking about getting a Ruger 10/22. There is an aftermarket barrel & bolt assembly to convert it to a .17 HMR. That plus the aftermarket stock kits would make a nice little plinking / survival gun.

outta the box price on a savage for the trigger/package i find hard to beat for the cost... what can i say ... my only major complaint is the finish... it attracts rust like nothing i have ever owned including an indian trade muskett that was my grand fathers.....

With simi auto , it sounds fun , but i am wondering how much juice ya loose in working the action.... its noticable in shot guns... and i have seen a differnce in 308 , and 223... i have seen small deer taken with the 17hmr and its a pretty capable round , i just think its got a pretty limited amount of juice so squeesing the extra proformance outta it with a bolty is my perfered way to go... but if you go that route ... i believe you have to get a 10/22mag. i was also looking at some of the after market stocks for the 10/22 im not sure if alot of them move over to the 10/22mag. but it with a break down stock and folder would be awsome.

VERY NICE !!!

Not positive about the 17HMR (but I would assume so), but the .22LR MarkXXII is a rebranded Anschutz 64 action.;)

Anschutz accuracy and quality with Weatherby styling. The Anschutz 64 wood is less than impressive, compared to the Weatherby.:D

Beautiful rifle!

Isheldon,

You're going to need to find a 10/22M if you want to convert it to a .17HMR. They are no longer produced and difficult to come by. You can however, convert at 10/22 into a .17 HM2 which is based off of the .22 long rifle case. Or just look at magnum research. They make some .17HMR's that are similar to the ruger 10/22M action. I've heard that they are great. There is always a volquartsen. They are much more spendy but have a great reputation for accuracy and reliability. But, if your heart is set on a ruger, you can find them at gun shows.

Hey, I think it's a plinker too. I love it! I was just making an associated comment that I can't believe that S&W is marketing a dedicated $600 AR platform .22LR as a "cheap alternative to shooting your regular AR." ROTFL!

My current favorite plinker is what I call my "100 year old technology assault rifle." It is a Marlin .44 Mag carbine that makes me way more accurate than 63 year old eyes should expect to be with open sights. At 120 yards it shoots inside the coverage of the front bead. There is something about slinging those big old chunks of lead
with no noticable recoil that is just pure fun.

It has also replaced the Mini-14 behind my truck seat.

I built a 10/22 with one of their original checkered walnut stocks and a threaded MOA receiver. .920 threaded heavy barrel. The internals are all original polished ruger parts with a valquartzen trigger assy. I can usually put 10 rounds thru 5 holes on paper. It drives tacks.

Spikes Tactical makes an excellent $200 drop in kit for your AR. Its cheap, fun and has no negetive effects on your rifle. I also have a GSG-5 which is one of those MP5 look alikes. 6 beans though was a little high for a 22. Cool as hell though.

My savages rust like crazy also. IT PUTS THE LOTION ON THE METAL!!!

Thanks, and I am sure this picture will answer your question.

I actually saw one when I went to pick this up. I can stick to feeding my ar 223's:cool:

Rich Stag. Nice set-up! should be perfect for grey diggers.

what are grey diggers?

sounds like a heck of a fun gun to shoot!

Just bore sighted this thing. The scope is going back. Not even close to enough adjustment to zero the thing. Guess I will go with Leupold.

That is a Kahles scope, you might want to look at other areas before condeming that scope!

Trust me I did. I did not want to come to this conclusion. First thing I thought was the rings must be off or the dovetail on the receiver. So, I put an old Nikon Monarch Gold 3-9 on it and no problems. Maybe it was just the Nikon got lucky??? Put a 3-9 Leupold on it...No Problems.

I am fairly certain it is the scope. When I first received it I slid of the eypiece flip up cover and the eyepiece rubber ring came halfway off with it.

I just ordered a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36mm and I am not looking back. This way I will be able to use my Talley Weatherby Low Mount Rings also:thumbup:

But trust me I was jumping to everything but the scope...even the bore sighter. Shooting a target from a bench with a bipod and no wind is all I needed to see it was not the bore sighter:thumbdn:
