Pls. suggest rescue boat tow post knife

I am trying to figure out what would be the ideal knife to attach to the tow post of our RHIB.

The primary use is to cut a 1" polypro tow rope in situations gone bad. Edge holding isn't too great an issue as it shouldn't see much use.

It will be exposed to frequent salt water baths with little care. Once a week it may get wiped down with Corrosion-X but that will realistically be the extent of the upkeep.

Ideally it will be single edged, at least partially serrated, blunt tipped so it doesn't puncture the tubes when dropped. Corrosion resistance should be good. It needs to be able to slice the rope in a single cut so I'm thinking min. four inch blade. Of course, cheaper is better as we are a volunteer organization. Sheath must be plastic or Kydex type.

What is out there that meets these requirements?

Thanks in advance

If a folder I'd go with a David Boye dendritic. I think he also makes some fixed blades in that same steel. You wouldn't even need to wipe that steel at all based on my experiences. http://www.boyeknives.com/

One of the Salts from Spyderco may be a cheaper alternative in the H1 steel though. I carry a Salt 1 myself and love it. But I also love my Boye knife and it sees quite a bit of pocket time too in the summer months. http://spyderco.com/

Definately a knife with H1 steel which is very corosion resistant. Take a look at the Spyderco Atlantic salt (folder) or the Benchmade 100SH2O (fb).

Thanks for the quick responses.

I should have said in the first post that it needed to be a fixed blade, not a folder.

This needs to be able to be grabbed and used quickly, and easy to use with gloved and or cold hands.

Currently, on my vest is the Benchmade 100SH20 with Spydie rescue as back up (Atlantic Salt still on order)
(this is my second rescue. first one died using Marine Tuff cloth, happier with corrosion-X)

We have used Frost knives before because at that cost they are pretty much disposable. I'm hoping for something better than the Frost and cheaper than the Boye. I didn't know they did fixed blades. Maybe there is nothing other than the Benchmade in this class. I was hoping to find a cheap single edged, serrated, blunt tipped dive knife in about a 5 or 6 inch length.

The one knife that comes close is the U.K. Remora. In fact I've put this on our generic "crew" vests but thought it was too small for the tow post.

Thaks for the input.

Don't know what your price range is but being fixed blades the only others I'd consider for serious salt water environments are the Beta Titanium knives from Mission in a serrated edge, or maybe a Bench Made Nimravus would suffice if you are sure to wipe it like you said. They are made for a marine environment but if I recall correctly they are ATS 34 steel.

You might also send David Boye an email and ask him if he has anything like you are wanting in a fixed blade dendritic cobalt blade.

The Mission Knives MPK should work.

The Benchmade 100s H20 sounds like it'd be almost perfect, fixed blade, corrosion proof H1 steel, kydex sheath, blunt tip, partially serrated. The only thing is that the blade is only 3 1/4 inches long.

Just checked at 1sks.com, the spyderco temperance (vg-10 stainless steel) is available in a fully serrated option, it is however quite pointy so keep that in mind.

small neck knife with kydex sheath................the Simonich knives are what come to mind first.............I have two, they are very servicable, and the ones that are diamond coated wont rust.

Also take a look at one of the Camillus Talonite fixed blades based on the Simonich design IIRC.
