OK, here's a tough one. Does anyone have a recipe to get the old gunmakers plum brown color on steel?

Peter you can buy the solution from a sporting goods or gun dealer, but it requires that you heat the steel. I don't recall how hot, but it may be ok to use?

Who is John Galt?

I've used it and it's OK. Untill the steel sizzles it how hot. I was looking to do it the old fashioned way.

You can get a nice purplish color with heat. Might wanna try some samples of the same steel at different temps.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

You might want to try Dixie Gun Work. They have just about anything for building gun and especially muzzleloaders. Check them out.
