Just bought a Plumb, marked 4 - 2 . Man this thing is heavy! It's in good shape except both bits have been sharpened rather thin. I am thinking just keep them both thin so not to lose any more metal than necessary. I will post some pics later. I need to make a new handle for it. What length would you guys make? Octagon? Thanks

Most users tend towards a longer handle on a heavier head. Usually @ 36". Some prefer a shorter handle. Since you are making your handle you could always cut it down if you don't like it.

Thanks, maybe i will shoot for 34" as I want a little flare at end. Whould you guys call this a "full peeling" stlye or what? The eye is 1/16" bigger on top.

I'd say that your nice Plumb double bit is a swamping pattern. Nice looking steel. I'd opt for a 36" helve for her.

Good lookin' axe! I've had the pleasure to hang a couple Plumbs lately and they've had quite good steel. 4^2 is a 4-1/2 pounder - big mutha. I wouldn't go less than 34".

It all depends on how fussy you wanna get and what you're starting with - lumber stock or a pre-manufactured oval handle. In either case frequent sightings down the length of the haft are a must. And pay close attention that the eye is in exact alignment with the length of the haft.

Some guys are cutting out the pattern on their bandsaws. OTOH, G-Pig here just takes a hatchet and starts whacking and he ends up with some really fine handles. How you do it will depend on what equipment you have and your skill level.

Oh, I will never buy a ready made handle. Not my style. I'm sanding her up right now. Turned out good I think. Pics later.

This is what I'm dealing with. This old girl has had some bad sharpening. What would you guys do? Yes I would like to kave a knot clipper side but I dont think its possible as thin as it is. There is a dish in the cheeks. Would you guys let it be or keep filing to remove the dish? It is wire edge sharp now. I can show you a pic of my finger if you like.

Beautiful job on that thing!. . . Just friggen fantastic looking work.

That thing looks awesome, very nice job. Looks like a workhorse

Bomber rectangular octagon! That thing is cool! Way to go on your handle.

My little Plumb cruiser throws some nice sized chips, I can only imagine what the four and a half pounder throws off.

That looks real good! The faceted swell is cool. The hang looks perfect. That haft tapers so nicely into the axe head. Very well done.

Thanks guys. Coming from you guys is a real compliment. I enjoy making handles. Got many more needed hung. I am looking for a nice Connecticut pattern, pm if have.
