I have a Plumb Ames hatchet on the way. Are the hatchets under the Ames label good ones? Paid $25.00 for it. It is in very good condition. Most of the Plumb Ames and McDonough sticker is still on the head. There is nothing to do on the head but the stain on the handle is gone in places. I have some colonial maple minwax stain and sealer that come close to that color. Would a sealer be good to use on the handle?

I literally just bought one of these, you can check out my thread here (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1375157-Plumb-Hatchet)

But all in all, its a great hatchet, I have used it a bit and its really fun. From what I can gather, the head weighs 1lb, there are no stamps on the head which is too bad. I just had to sand down the handle and BLO it because it was severely dried out. Post some pics when you get it, would love to see!

Ames-Plumb manufactured quite a few types of hatchets between 1971 and 1981 (when they took over and when they were bought out) so it's possible that there is a Plumb stamp under the label. If you value it as a collector it's going to take a long time before you see any results but if you want to go ahead and use it the $25 investment will beat out that same amount of money spent on a current production Mexico or China cheapie.

How about using minwax stain sealer on the handle? Is it ok to use a sealer or just buy a stain only?

No do not use a sealer, if you plan on using it just sand the handle down and let it drink up some oil ( the stain may be pretty deep in the wood, so you might end up with a pretty unique look )
