Hello all!

My dad pulled this out of the local trash facility yesterday. We have been looking all over to try and figure out what it is but we can't find anything like it. The notch appears to be factory done or someone really took some time on it. Can anyone tell me if this was a factory tool and if so what it's used for?

Thanks !

Not factory. Probably chipped and then cut out. And the other bit is badly worn. Good candidate for an axe mod since it's so far gone already.

She's "done". Nice conversation piece and/or wall hanger though, and/or you could get inventive and try to make a single bit axe out of it. Where it broke off/shattered coincides nicely with where the blade temper dividing line is.

Has anyone ever experienced that kind of catastrophic failure of an ax head, single or double bit? I have had small chips come off the metal as well as having sparks fly from cutting really dry eucalyptus but a break like that defies the imagination. Maybe in very cold weather...Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread but seeing that kind of failure in an ax head blew me away.

I'd just say people do really stupid things with axes, particularly if it was a tool they just had no interest in, no use for, etc.

I watched a YouTube video once were a guy got a local shop to weld in a new high carbon bit on a nice old vintage axe head. His reason being that he was trying to make a poor man's GB an old American axes didn't have the quality steel like GBs do  at least according to him ;)

It did occur to me though that if you were so inclined you could in theory do the same with an old axe if you had the means that is.

I've also seen that dumbass's video, what I really hate is the fact ( besides the fact that he seems to think that an ugly ads GB is a Holy grail ) the video was only part 1 and he never posted a part 2.
Maybe he wised up and realized what he had done and just went ahead and found himself another REAL axe head and forgot about GB's.
