Plumb ax identification help

Hi everyone,

I know nothing about axes, but bought this as a Christmas gift. So I know it is a plumb hewing hatchet since it is flat on one side. The bottom of the handle says 2992 which seems to be original from what I can tell. However, when I look up plumb hatchet 2992, they are straight instead of “tear drop” at the eye. However, the old plumb ads are more diamond shaped and listed as 2991. So I’m confused as to where this one fits in. Also, the handle is not flush with the ax head. When I got it, it was filled with a glue like substance and rounded. I don’t believe it was permabond…it literally looked like a poorly applied foamy gorilla glue and crumbled out very easily. So, can anyone tell me what I have and what year it is? Thanks. I will post pictures if I can figure out how.

I was thinking that as well, but I did find a couple for sale online that looked exactly like mine with the same 2992 handle. So it had me wondering.

I should have waited for the pictures. Now I see why you are wondering. I looked through the advertising I have and in addition to the 1965 ad I posted, I found ads for 2992s from 1929, 1938, 1941, and 1955 and all showed pointed lugs. Also (with the exception of the smaller 2991) I didn't find any other Plumb broad hatchets with rounded lugs.

Yeah, it’s a real head scratcher. I wanted to include some sort of description along with the hatchet as to the year or model, but I can’t figure out what exactly it is.

Very interesting. I've got one that looks exactly like the clip from the catalog but the handle is stamped 2932.
