I picked up this Plumb BSA hatchet a few months ago; it was in a 5 gal bucket of old tools including a carpenters hatchet, 3 or 4 block planes, a brace and several bits, old wood chisels etc. $40 for teh whole bucket.

I went to the antique market today and saw this:

epoxy in the eye, probably not that old ?? Handle has some remnants of that same burgundy color paint.

The bit has a few dings but not too bad and it doesn't appear to have been used or sharpened much at all. I plan on sanding the handle smooth and filing out the dings, leaving teh rest of the head as is.

They make a nice pair. Great pattern. Watch the axe doesn't 'glance off' with that short bevel though.

Good find. regards... Frank

That red stain on the handle and epoxy in the eye would be as old as the axe, I think. The glue was called permabond and Plumb made them like that for a while. Plumb ads were bragging about their permanently attached handles when I was a cub scout in the mid-sixties. That's 1960s.
Nice finds in good shape- congrats.
