I was at a Flea Market today and picked this up for $10.

There is a Varnish/Shellac type coating on the blade... i think it is clogging up and filling up a lot of the detail of the logo. There is no rust but should i do a Vinegar soak on this head? how should i remove this coating?

By the way this hatchet (Bottom Pic) was there for $15 but i passed on it... Is it worth going back to get it? Stamped logo "Fulton Merit Mark"

Both have seen a lot of use (toe's are disproportionately worn (from use and re-sharpening)) but for $10-15 you can't go wrong compared to the cost of half-decent 'quality new' stuff. You sure can tell whether a PO used a hand file and puck or 'quick and dirty' opted for an electric grinder!

Before anything I'd invest 3 bucks for a 24hr White Vinegar Bath; you'd be surprised how effective it is. I would follow with Rubbing Alcohol and then if still being stubborn...use Kerosene.

I don't think I would go to all that trouble for a run of the mill sample but that Plumb mark combined with the Champion inscription has my curiosity up??? I don't really care if it's the long lost Arc of Axes regards any value. It's just that some of the mark's I've been finding in the last month or so border on artistry by their own right.

I hope that makes sense...labor of love and all that. If it turns out to be a sucky, worn out sample...PM me for a new shipping address

You've got better eyes than I do. I honestly don't see much evidence of grinding/sharpening at all. If I draw a line from heel to toe (worthless on a computer monitor but if I had the axe in hand) it looks to be OEM. If you're thinking uneven though I will certainly take your word for it

Plumb Champions are top shelf axes. That's worn but it's still worth something. I think you did great for $10.

Fulton was a Sears brand - value priced compared to their Craftsman line. I wouldn't give $15 for a Fulton with that much wear.
