I was given a Plumb double bit axe by my grandfather and I was wondering if anyone could help me get some info on it. I was curious to see if there was a way to find out how old it really is? It has the Plumb stamp in a rectangle with a 3 and a smaller 5 stamped above the logo. I have found info on the 3 with a smaller 2 but nothing about the 5. The head is 9 1/2 inches at the widest point, the top of the bit is flat while the bottom is curved. The eye is 3 inches long and 5/8 inch at the widest point. Does anyone know anything about the Plumb axes? What would be the best way to restore it (it is a bit rusty)? Ill try and post some pictures up soon. Thanks is advance for any info.

Plumb used that stamp for several decades. Hard to date it. WAG - 1950s to 1970's. The old Plumb stuff tends to be of very good quality. That one needs some serious re-profiling of the edge and some work around the eye. I see a file in your future.......

Thanks for the reply. It does need a pretty good amount of work. Do you know what the little 5 would mean? I read that a 3 with a little 2 is 3 1/2 lbs and a 3 with a little 4 is 3 1/4 lbs but I was not able to find anything out on the little 5.

There are some prior discussions about whether this means 3.5 pounds or 3 pound 5 ounces. Somebody had one that weighed 3 pounds 5 ounces, and somebody else had one that weighed 3 pounds 8 ounces.
