Check out this little gem, I mean plumb, I just got. Man this thing is beautiful, looks way better in person.

Great looking hatchet. It has a poll shaped like a rafting axe but the shape of the bit is like a cedar pattern. I wonder if that poll is hardened. I bet it is. Can you file test it?

I think the poll is hardened. If I file on the poll and it's hard as hell, I'm guessing it is hardened?

That's right. Then take a few passes next to the eye for comparison. Eyes are tempered so they don't crack from being wedged.

After a more careful look I don't see a temper line on the poll. The line is obvious on the bit. I'm leaning toward not hardened now. But no matter. It's a beautiful hatchet either way. What does the handle say?

I will try it. I am not sure if it is the original handle. I can definitely read the word "scout", not sure about the rest.

Nice looking plumb you have there Double Ott. I really like my plumb I just got, I almost don't want to use it because it is so pretty.

Those are great looking axes. Them Cedar pattern plumbs have been a bit of a mystery to me, some have a hardened poll indicated by lack of mushrooming and a tendency to chip, others will mushroom. Either way they are great axes and them old Plumbs are top shelf.

I've got the same pattern weighing in at 3 1/4 pounds or so. Plumb axes consistently are the best examples of the classic
American geometry. I like them better than Kelly or Collins for the most part. Although I still prefer regional examples from here in the north East.

I have a couple of those Plumb axes. Mine are 1 3/4 lbs. Both have factory handles, one is 17 inches and one is a 26 inch "super scout". I think it is a great axe design and a nice size for camping.

My concern is that you may not live were there are any cedar trees to properly test that Cedar axe out on. Which may be why you prefer the Main axes. As a favor to you I will pay shipping and you can send it to me and I will give you my honest opinion.
I have noticed that my neighbor has one that must be 3 1/2 lbs or so, but it is not a plumb(can't quite read the stamp from my yard). I would try to trade him out of it but he has not spoken to me for a few of years(a good neighbor), since I ran his grandson off for bothering my daughter. Maybe I should ask him if his grandson still is interested in my daughter?
