This is an awesome Plumb 4lb Jersey/Rockaway pattern full sized axe in amazing condition. This tool was cared for. The head has no rust or pits, and a poll that is in almost perfect shape. The original handle is also very nice, and the head is solid and tight, no wiggle at all. Overall this is a very nice axe given it's vintage. I did not hang this one, the handle is solid and original.

In this case the axe was nice enough that I wanted to show it off a bit. While in good shape, it still has that light rust coating and the handle had that grey/dry look. I put the extra time into fine sanding and steel wooling the surface of the handle, and also using steel wool to clean up the head. After this it handle and head received 3 coats of boiled linseed oil, then a final treatment of a linseed oil/bees wax/turpentine that was then polished. Both the head and handle are fully treated and protected, have a nice beautiful sheen and are dry and smooth to the touch. They are not sticky in the least. I will probably do this to all of my axes and hatchets going forward. I will probably sell this eventually as I only really use nothing bigger than a boy's axe, and a splitting maul for big pieces.

What a beauty!!!!!!!!!!!! Love that old haft, too. A real gem you've got there.

It was once covered with rust. A mint Plumb would have a smooth surface all over.

That's my favorite look in old axes. Patina on the head and handle, and lots of life left in it.

SO SWEEEET!!!

That one could replace your splitting maul most of the time. She's a keeper.

Nice work there ..... so envious every time I see a Jersey. Jersey/Kentucky/Rockaway ... not sure I can tell the difference but my collection is missing one, that much I know for sure. :(

If you keep looking it will turn up one day. If you want to re-handle one, heads are easy to find on eBay. CT makes one but only with a 36 inch handle. If they made one like that in a boy's axe I would probably buy it just because.

I have another that looks just like this, but it's a Collins and it's a boy's axe. It hasn't been fixed up yet but it's in the same condition so it will get the same treatment. THAT one will probably be a keeper.

You're telling me there's a boy's jersey axe? I was thinking that I had seen an old catalog page that showed them in 2-1/2lbs but I've never seen one. I look on ebay all the time, but they either go for a premium or the bit is only so-so. Yeah I'm looking for an old one - though I'm not particular about brands or markings.

Well, I'm not sure what it is technically called, but it's smaller than that 4lb head, maybe 3-3.5 but bigger than 2.25, but it's on a 27 inch handle. It has a cutting profile. It's a Homestead. I'll post a pic this weekend.

Sweet. Looking forward to it.

JB,
I always have an axe in the back of my Trailblazer and the current ride along is a double oval Craftsman Connie- cool to see someone giving another one the limelight. Mine has some metal rot at the toe but I love that axe. I prefer Connies and Kentucky's but a nice profiled 2 1/2 Dayton boys axe is a close second.
