Dragged this neglected old girl from under the bench yesterday and breathed new life into her. Plumb was a brand highly regarded by the old bush-men here in NZ.

This is probably a good example of the Plumb axes commonly found here. I have seen many with a much more rounded poll, which I think looks good and more distinctive.

In my opinion the haft on this one is in too far. I like to leave a small shoulder.

Plumb was one of the major players in your area - they made good products - high quality metal - they always have it I have found. I would assume you could expect the same in your area, though I dont know the exacts of manufacture for you. I know(have read) about some, but it seems complicated.

Congrats on a great piece!

Thanks for showing another quality vintage axe that only rarely comes up for sale over here.

I second Steve's sentiment. I love those patterns, and I don't think I've ever seen one in person. I just picked up my first Connecticut for $8 on the bay and I think it's as close as I'm going to get to one of those Dandenongs. Is that right? Great piece regardless, Frank.

This is an unfinished Kelly True temper Dandenong. Very common here. I don't think this one has cut much timber but lots of concrete or rocks by the looks of her face. She'll be nice again after a little face-lift.

I love that Plumb, Frank. That old handle really gives her a lot of class.

Looks like you're giving the ol' file quite a workout on that True Temper. A labor of love for sure but it'll be worthwhile.

Nice Plumb, thats a class restoration there, can wait to see the Kelly restored either! great job.

I recently scored 4 plumbs off of the bay this last week. I'd love to have have an Aussie head, but man the shipping is CRAZY!

It's a beautiful axe- Do you know the head-weight? The handle seems a little small for it, but I've heard around here that handles were thicker when hickory was better. Also I just bought a plumb 3-pounder on a full-size handle, so maybe mine's a little small for its handle.

Hi Porch..The head is 4 1/2 pound and the haft 33" which seems a good combination for this axe. She has a nice feel. When I was younger I liked the 4 1/2 on 36" now I prefer 4 1/2 on 34". It seems to fit me best and in my opinion looks great.

Thanks, Frank- so it looks big because it is big. I almost never see anything heavier than 3.5 lbs.
At my age I like the 36" helve for leaning on.

What's interesting about this axe is that the poll is so small. All the weight is forward of the handle. That might make it a little tougher to 'steer' than a more balanced axe like a DB.

Hi Peg...I have very little experience with DB axes so can't comment on that.

But the balance on this Plumb is great. As you can see in the pics. If she was top heavy...when held like that she would be face down.

Wow! The photo really tells the story, Frank. It's surely more well-balanced than I imagined.
