Got this hatchet today for the sum total of $1. It says “Plumb” over “Victory” in a square box. The edge has minimal damage, and the handle needs a replacement. From my google searching, I see that this may be from right after WW2 (?).

I enjoy vintage tools, but I’m not as knowledgeable as i am with knives. I’m just trying to confirm when this might have been made, what style handle it would have had, and if it retains much value before I sharpen ‘er up!

Their national pattern hatchets normally came with their kind of rounded knob end scout handle.
You'll see a few examples if you Google plumb national pattern hatchet.
A current link scout hatchet handle will have a close shape if you wan't something more original, but I personally hate this shape of handle.

The one that's on it looks nice enough, I'd just nourish and salvage the handle that's on it.

Your assessment on the age is about right, just after ww2 and before they introduced the permabond red epoxy in the eye around I think 1955.

As H&S says, if it were mine & the present handle is fitted in the head solidly I'd oil it sharpen it & use it as it looks OK.
Even with the correct handle it isn't super valuable as there are plenty about, below is my Plumb victory thought a different head style.
Use it & enjoy it, a great buy for a Dollar. 👍
