You might want to change the side of the thumb stud ( if you are right handed person ).. nice overall shape, it seems that blade goes a little to far up in open position, maybe it can be corrected a little with some spine grinding
For a first i think it's good

I understand completely. I still have to even out the spine so it will come down a bit.

I can change the thumb stud at any time, but for now I'm enjoying the left side thumb stud.

I will drill and tap for right hand and left hand tip up only carry.

I probably should've posted pictures after everything was done but I just got to excited :)

I have ceramic ball bearings for the detent coming too.

Thanks for the comment.

does anyone else have any more constructive criticism? It would be much appreciated.

I applaud your work. Well, at least your tenacity. :)

For a first knife, it's OK. It appears to be on its way with the basic functions.

Thumbstud is simply wrong.
Don't get to embellishing (heat coloring) until you have mastered the basics.
Not enough strength in the slabs with only two screws holding them together. You need 3-4 standoffs.
The shape is passable, but not stylish. That's OK now. Look forward to style in your future.

Overall: The knife is unfinished and the images stink. You are doing it wrong. Read my sig (re: 815).

My name is Jim or Coop. You are asking for our time. Give us the benefit of a real person name to talk to. It may be the internet, but the human condition still applies.

Come back with those improvements. :)

Good luck,

Jim

Jim,

I plan on building up my shop but for now the only tools I have are a drill press, a 2X42 belt sander (no hollow grinds yet), a heat treating furnace, and a buffing/wire wheel grinder.

That being said the knife is not the best it could possibly be and im happy I at least made the lock function properly without significant blade play.

one question I do have is why cant a knife be held together with 3 screws? I'm sure you have reasoning behind it and maybe I don't understand correctly (which is probably whats going on :D).

This design was made because I knew it was my first knife and wanted to get the basics down first. This was never meant to be a show piece, but rather to see if it could be done :)

Edit: when I get done with it I will most certainly post more pictures! I want to say thanks for your criticism; it helps greatly!

for now this thread is closed until better photos can be achieved and the knife is finished.

Thanks, Ryan
