PM2 Blade Swapping

Hey y’all,

So I’ve been thinking about picking up a PM2. I had one a while ago but ended up selling it. It was just a little too big and tacticool (Digi/DLC) plus wasn’t a fan of the compression lock.

But times have changed, mainly I wear more jeans now so the weight is less of an issue and they have a left handed model. I’d still like a DLC blade, which doesn’t exist in the left handed model. I was thinking I could purchase the Lefty model and a DLC model and then swap the blades. But I’m not totally sure if the compression lock is compatible.

I know that it’s not a “reverse liner lock” like some people describe it as. I know that the cross sectional area of the liner must be crushed to fail rather than simply bend like a liner lock. But what I don’t know is if the lock interface has an angled grind to “catch” the lock like on a liner lock. If so, I obviously won’t be able to as the grinds will be opposite but I haven’t been able to find any info on this.

Thanks

I would think it’s totally doable as long as the blade donor is also from a left hand PM2 because the compression lock is reversed and you will need the detent ball ramp and hole on the correct side of the blade.

Hmmm I didn’t even think about the detent ball. I guess it’s not going to work as Spyderco doesn’t make a left handed model with a DLC blade

The blade lockface is ground at an angle to catch the lockbar, so swapping a righty blade into a lefty handle wouldn't work.

If you can't find a lefty DLC blade, you could just get a regular lefty blade and get an aftermarket DLC coating. @razor-edge-knives offers that as a service.

As left handed as I am, I have no problem operating a regular compression lock with my left hand.

Pick up a standard pm2 and just switch the clip.

Agree. I m right handed but I think the compression lock is one of the easiest to operate left handed.
For me it is as easy with my left hand as my right, which is unusual.

I’m the exact opposite. I find pretty much every other lock (Axis, BackLock, Liners) easy than the compression. It was certainly doable but never intuitive. That was the main reason why I got rid of my first one.

I stumble a little on pretty much every knife. A little less so with axis and CBBL. Hand me a left handed knife and watch. You would swear I've never touched a knife before.

Do you think it would work with a bit of filing? It feels like it would, but I'd just like to see if anyone's tried it before.

Never tried it and don’t own any more Spydercos. Wow five year old thread! 🤣
