PM2 Hard use, cleaning and sharpening?

Hello all -

I just picked up a PM2 after resisting it for many many many years. My go to has become my Salt I and Pacific Salt due to the fact that they are rust proof and I did not have to worry about - well anything on them. I got the PM2 and quickly became in total love with this one. My questions -

1. IS there a PM2 hard use thread like that of the GB's?
2. After using this awesome slicer - how do YOU clean it? Is it ok to rinse under water and quick dry like I do my salts? Is it ok to cut fruits and other foods? I read that the S30V steel is quite resistant to rust etc - but wanted the experts to weigh in.
3. Using the sharp maker - is it possible to bring this blade back to hair shaving sharp?

I use to buy knives with out the intent on really using them and even safe queening most, the older I get the more I use the tool as the tool it is - so I want to be sure that I properly maintain that tool.

Of course - post up some photos of your PM2's in action or whatever - it is always good to see photos :)

Hey Brvheart!

First, congrats on the purchase. I've said this on the forum before and I'll say it again: the PM2 is a knife that I've fallen more and more in love with the more I've used it. It's a wonderful tool.

I work in a distillery and mine is my go to work knife. I have other spydies that I EDC but the PM2 is my dedicated carry at work.

Being that it's a distillery it sees a lot of use. I'm constantly opening bags of grain, breaking down boxes, etc. Also (particularly when I'm mashing) it gets super steamy and humid. I've never had any problems with corrosion, so you should be good to go.

I tend to get a lot of grain dust and stuff all mushed up in the inside of the knife but I just give it a good rinse under running water, open and close it a few times, blow the water out of the pivot and dry it well. Again, never had any problems.

Every week to two weeks I touch it up on my sharpmaker on the 40 degree inclusive setting. 10-20 passes per side on the medium and then the fine stones and it literally pops hairs off of my arm.

Like I said, it's a joy to carry and (in my experience) simple and easy to maintain. I think you made a great choice! Let us know how you like it as you keep using it.

Thank you VE! I don't plan on babying this one for sure! Between food (fruits and steak), boxes, lots of wood shaving to start fires etc - Thank you for the awesome reply and the pic of the mash!

You can get hair whittling sharp off the sharpmaker. The trick is to get it receipt paper push cutting cleanly on the medium stones, then progress. Don't progress until you can't go further with the medium stones.

I probably shouldn't be on this thread:rolleyes: Because the C-36 Military is my main EDC at this time. But a really good buddy of mine here locally has a Para 2 and loves it. He confronted me a while back about cleaning his Para 2 and I told him of the virtues of "Ballistol" which works magic on G-10 folders especially.

But "Ballistol" is not only a good product to clean with it leaves a nice protective coating as well. I've been using it a lot for at least 10 years or so.

As far as lube goes I've been using nothing but Militec. I hope that helps :)

Hi OP, congrats on the new knife. As stainless steels go, s30v isn't really at the top of the list but it has plenty of corrosion resistance for normal use. No problem rinsing it and shaking or blowing it out. As far as sharpening, as others have said, with a bit of practice you can get it far sharper than it was when it was new.

Doesn't ballistol have an issue with being corrosive to phosphor bronze washers? I seem to remember reading that somewhere

The MSDS says it is compatible with all metals (but dissolves traces of copper, zinc, lead and tombac), and actually describes it as a corrosion inhibitor. It is designed to clean brass, bronze and silver among many other things.

I've used it without any complaints, but I don't put it on my pivots. I've read mixed experiences here.

I clean all my folders with a liberal spray of WD-40. If it has mud etc., I'll wash it really well with Dawn or whatever soap you like and rinse it with very hot water. Then spray it with WD-40. I then blow it out with compressed air.

My PM2 seems to like bike chain oil but not CLP which is pretty much the opposite of all my other knives
