PM2 liners

Every PM2 I’ve ever owned has had nested liners. I noticed on the Cruwear/Micarta PM2 just recently released, has liners that are flush with the scales. Is this to come with future PM2s, or is it just in the Cruwear/Micarta version?

Supposedly it's a one off design needed to support the Micarta scales!

I find it odd that they changed the structure of the knife on this particular model. I definitely like the nested liners better. Looks cleaner IMO.

Micarta doesn't have the strength G10 does

Yeah, I saw that after I watched video. Although there are aftermarket scale makers that can make nested liner scales for the PM2. Ripps, Putman, Boomer52, are some makers I’ve ordered PM2 scales from and they are perfectly functional.

If your aftermarket scales crack, the maker is only responsible for the scales. If the factory scales crack, shrink or warp, the maker is responsible for the whole knife, as well as taking the reputation hit for sending out a defective knife.

That was my point, I've never had any aftermarket micarta scales crack. And they were nested scales.

Who is breaking scales? Is this something anyone is seriously concerned about? Putman, Flytanium, RCBW, RGT, SDK… they all put out quality stuff. I say just pick the ones the look and feel the best to you, PM2s have solid steel liners, the blade would break way before the scales.

Yep. And my point is, Spyderco is warrantying the entire knife, not just the scales. Spyderco stakes their reputation *as a knife manufacturer, not just a part maker* on each knife they send out. They've had issues with Micarta in the past that they do not care to repeat, so they put full liners under their Micarta scales to avoid those issues. Is it overkill? Maybe, but Sal doesn't appear to think so.

I have three PM2s and three types of liners.
The regular G10/S45VN with nested liners, the Crucarta with regular liners, and the copper REX 45 with partially milled liners.
I realize that means that I have to pretty much sacrifice the G-10 in order to get some aftermarket scales. But, I can switch the blades. Going to put either the REX or the S45 on wood scales, the Cruwear is perfect for the Micarta in my opinion, tough and natural seeming.
